US, Israel to hold major missile defense exercise

"More than 3,500 US personnel will take part in the drill, about 1,000 of them in Israel, putting a total price tag on the exercise at $60 million. The weapons will include US Patriot missile batteries and an AEGIS ballistic missile defense ship, along with the multi-tiered missile defense system that Israel has been developing. All but one of the launches will be simulated. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing the United States to set Iran an ultimatum or risk seeing Israel launch unilateral strikes." Man attempts to blow up New York Fed with fake FBI bomb

"'Attempting to destroy a landmark building and kill or maim untold numbers of innocent bystanders is about as serious as the imagination can conjure. The defendant faces appropriately severe consequences,' FBI Acting Assistant Director Mary Galligan said in a statement. 'It is important to emphasize that the public was never at risk in this case, because two of the defendant’s ‘accomplices’ were actually an FBI source and an FBI undercover agent. The FBI continues to place the highest priority on preventing acts of terrorism.'" Continue reading

Debate Highlight: Showdown Over Benghazi

"In Libya, these days, a 'protest' is more than likely to be an armed assault rather than a peaceful demonstration with placards and speeches. That the makers and promoters of 'Innocence' were well aware of this possibility is my own theory, and as we learn more about the origins of this provocation I believe this will be confirmed. This was no random YouTube stunt but a well-organized operation: so far we know almost nothing about it, except that the film’s alleged creator has at least a dozen aliases and is now safely behind bars, where no journalists can ask him any questions." Glenn Greenwald: The lame rules for presidential debates: a perfect microcosm of US democracy

"All views that reside outside the narrow confines of the two parties are rigidly excluded. Anyone who might challenge or subvert the two-party duopoly is rendered invisible. Lobbyists who enrich themselves by peddling their influence run everything behind the scenes. Corporations pay for the process, which they exploit and is then run to bolster rather than threaten their interests. The media's role is to keep the discourse as restrictive and unthreatening as possible while peddling the delusion that it's all vibrant and free and independent and unrestrained. To understand the US political process, one can just look to how these sham debates are organized and how they function." Continue reading

Green Party candidate: Police handcuffed me to a chair for eight hours

"Stein criticized the group that organized the event, the Commission on Presidential Debates, which was put together as a joint effort by Democrats and Republicans to administer the debates after the League of Women Voters stepped out of that role in 1987. Stein said the two women were handcuffed the entire time they spent inside a facility specifically designed to hold protesters, even though they had only been charged with violations. She said a request for their release was denied because, she was told, authorities did not want them 'wandering around.'" Continue reading

The Politics of Fear in America: A Nation at War with Itself

"Turn on the TV or flip open the newspaper on any given day, and you will find yourself accosted by reports of government corruption, corporate malfeasance, militarized police and marauding SWAT teams. Yet even more dangerous than these violations of our basic rights is the language they are couched in—the language of fear. And, as John Whitehead says in this week's vodcast, the only thing which will improve our present condition is the taming of our fear." Continue reading

Jim Rogers: Neither Obama nor Romney Are Worth My Vote

"Rogers isn't an America basher but a citizen who feels apart from the economic policies pursued by his country. He casts a ballot for none of the above because he doesn't think President Obama or Mitt Romney can rebuild the nation's flagging economy. In terms of fiscal and all other policies, Rogers sees one major difference between the two candidates: 'One is from Boston and the other is from Chicago,' he states." Continue reading

Green Party Presidential Candidate Jill Stein Arrested Before Debate

"Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was arrested outside of Hofstra University on Tuesday after attempting to enter debate grounds. According to Stein's campaign press statement, Stein and running mate Cheri Honkala joined supporters outside the Hofstra campus at 2pm, where Stein declared, 'We are here to bring the courage of those excluded from our politics to this mock debate, this mockery of democracy.' When they started to walk onto the debate grounds, they were stopped by police officers, and then the two women sat down on the ground. Stein was arrested and as of early Tuesday evening was still in jail, charged with disorderly conduct." Continue reading
