An Orwellian America

"We have been gradually disempowered by a corporate state that, as Huxley foresaw, seduced and manipulated us through sensual gratification, cheap mass-produced goods, boundless credit, political theater and amusement. Now that credit is drying up, good jobs for the working class are gone forever and mass-produced goods are unaffordable, we find ourselves transported from 'Brave New World' to '1984.' The state, crippled by massive deficits, endless war and corporate malfeasance, is clearly sliding toward unavoidable bankruptcy. In crisis-ravaged Greece, ‘laughter clubs’ are booming

"Three years into a crippling recession that has reduced incomes here by as much as 60 percent, increased the number of suicides by 40 percent and forced 1.3 million people onto growing unemployment lines, Greeks are grappling with ways to remain sane. Many of them are turning to what some call a free cure to just about any ailment: laughter. In one improvised routine, members are taught to laugh at the sight of an electricity bill or the kind of tax notice that Greeks have been repeatedly served in recent years as part of new austerity measures intended to make up for decades of profligate spending by the state." "The usually reserved waitress at our favorite Greek-owned Sunday breakfast place approached us in dismay. Her daughter and son-in-law were escaping Greece for the US. Even middle class professionals were finding themselves digging in the garbage for food to eat, she said. Former Greek career diplomat Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos says that the government has hired Blackwater, the American private military firm infamous for its activities in Iraq, which now goes by the name 'Academi', along with five other international for-profit security outfits. Packed Seattle hearing on new pot law

"They came in suits and cowboy hats, with cropped gray hair and long ponytails, and they filled one room at Seattle City Hall and spilled into another, about 400 strong. They were there to express views about the state’s new legal-marijuana law enacted last fall by Initiative 502. Growers, breeders, sellers and advocates came out to push a variety of platforms. Washington’s new law, which allows those 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of pot, must be implemented by December. In theory, adults will then be able to walk into stores around the state and buy locally grown pot that is licensed, taxed and regulated by the state." Continue reading →

Michigan couple grew 206 marijuana plants ‘across the street from city hall’

"A couple in Coloma, Michigan was arrested Wednesday and charged in connection to a marijuana growing operation authorities claim they found in the rear of their computer repair business, located directly across the street from the town’s city hall. In all, police said they pulled 206 marijuana plants out of the building. The couple, 66-year-old Dennis Dickson and 57-year-old Emily Jacobs, were arrested Wednesday afternoon following an investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Authorities said the total value of the grow was roughly $206,000." Continue reading →

Strong smell of marijuana reported inside Colorado Capitol

"A strong smell of marijuana was reported inside the Colorado Capitol Wednesday morning. The entire Senate chamber smelled like marijuana, said Doug Schepman, communications director for the Senate Democrats. 'It wasn't like a car just passing by and catching a whiff,' said Schepman. 'It was bad.' Senate President John Morse cracked up fellow lawmakers during the session by asking: 'Do you smell marijuana in here, or is it just me?' On the recording of the morning's proceedings, Morse can be heard asking, 'If the Sergeants would please douse all the doobies in the area.' There's still no word on the source of the smell." Task force: Tourists welcome to get stoned in Colorado

"The task force agreed that tourists should be sold smaller amounts than residents, and only Colorado residents who’ve lived in the state two or more years should be allowed to sell marijuana at retail. Retail locations would also be required to sell only what they grow. Additionally, starting in 2014 only licensed medical marijuana dispensary owners will be allowed to apply for recreational sales permits, but the application process would open to all Colorado residents starting in 2015."
