Florida Police Jail Man For Petitioning Against Red Light Cameras

"'As I was approaching him, I read 'BAN CAMS' on the sign he was wearing,' Officer Campbell wrote. 'He was holding a large stack of papers... I asked him if he had a permit to protest the red light cameras, and he said no.' At this point, Officer Campbell asked for Schmidter's identification. Since he was not driving, the man explained he was not carrying any. The officer then asked for his name and date of birth. Schmidter declined to do so unless the officer could show him what law he had violated. Officer Campbell said he did not have to do that. After asking one more time he grabbed Schmidter's wrist, handcuffed him, and placed him under arrest." Continue reading →

Lawsuit against police over Radio Shack strip search settled

"The settlement, signed by Mitchell in August and approved by the City Council last week, releases the city and the officers from any further claims by Mitchell. The city also maintains the settlement is not an admission of any wrongdoing. It also includes a confidentiality clause. In May 2009, Mitchell alleged he was pulled over in the shopping center parking lot, ordered out of the car at gunpoint and handcuffed. He said he was taken into Radio Shack where the police pulled off his shorts and underwear, searching for drugs. No drugs were found." Continue reading →

Police detective accused of multiple beatings, wrongful arrests

"At least three people claim they've been beaten and wrongly arrested by a veteran Miami Beach police detective. Andrew Mossberg told Local 10 last week that he thought he was stopping a robbery when Philippe Archer, an undercover Miami Beach police detective, knocked him unconscious and arrested him. The department launched an internal affairs investigation into the incident. 'The Miami Beach Police Department has to know that Detective Archer is a problem,' said Michael Goodman, an attorney who represents Guy Moulin. 'He can't just keep beating people, getting sued, and they pretend like nothing ever happened,' said Goodman." Continue reading →

Officer takes seized vehicles home, bills city for repairs

"A Eugene police officer has been reprimanded for improperly taking seized vehicles home with him, neglecting to tell his bosses about it and then charging the city for the time he claims to have spent repairing them. The officer told investigators that he had taken the vehicles home to fix them up so that they could be sold at a higher value as part of a city program that transfers the proceeds of auctioned items into a fund that aids crime victims, officials said. But questions were raised when a property control specialist couldn’t find the motor­cycle, and an internal investigation was launched." Continue reading →

Police Cruiser Slams Into Couple On Bike, Couple Flies Over Trooper’s Car

"A cop's dash-cam shows him slamming his car into a couple on a motorcycle. The impact was extremely violent and you can see the couple go flying. After the office realized what happens he stops his car and gets out. He then go out of his car and the video shows it looks like he seemed to be more concerned with his car than the couple he just seriously injured. News report on running man seeking help killed by North Carolina Police

"Officers responded to a 911 call of a suspicious man outside a woman's home in Charlotte. The man had been knocking on her door repeatedly. Police say that when they got there, a man matching the caller's description ran toward them. One of the officers pulled out his stun gun, but it malfunctioned. Another officer then opened fire, police said. Jonathan Ferrell died at the scene. He was shot several times. He was unarmed." Continue reading →

“We’re Really Not Apologetic” for two killings, say Texas’ Airborne Snipers

"On Tuesday, a grand jury decided not to indict a Texas trooper who had killed two unarmed Guatemalan immigrants after shooting them from a helicopter last year. A police officer in a helicopter shot at a nonviolent suspect and killed two innocent men, and his actions were deemed defensible because the DPS gave him authority to do so. Before he fell under intense scrutiny, McCraw had expressed no remorse for putting people on the ground in danger while using lethal force against a nonviolent suspect. A few months before the incident, he had told interviewers, 'We're really not apologetic about it. We've got an obligation to protect our men and women when we're trying to protect Texas.'" "I was walking back to Baldwin St. & I came across loud cries coming from an alleyway 'Stop, I’m not resisting' the voice yells. I hear glass bottles breaking and literally what seems to be some sort of fight going on Behind the locked gate… the first image in this album. I looked through the hole to see what was going on. When I looked I saw one officer just walking right out of frame. A few seconds later the shop owner that had the key to the gate came and opened it for me as if she was telling me to go ahead and take photos of what I see. Teen arrested for iPhone ‘terrorism’ at school faces 20 years in prison

"The boy, who has not been named, was a student at H.L. Bourgeois High school. He had downloaded a phone application called 'The Real Strike' which utilizes the camera on a smart phone and superimposes a picture of a gun over the live-feed video. Whatever the camera phone points towards shows up on the screen with a graphic of a gun pointed towards it. The user can then use the app to simulate a mock shootout, and can record and share the results. The student used his phone at school to record some of his classmates, allegedly making a video of a mock shootout at school." Continue reading →
