NYC pays $75K settlement to Manhattan couple arrested for dancing in subway

"Stern, a dentist, and Hess, a film prop master, had just left Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night’s Swing when they encountered a steel-drum player on a nearly empty platform in the Columbus Circle subway station and began to boogie. Two cops told them their happy feet weren’t allowed and hauled them off after Stern could produce only a credit card, which did bear a picture of her, as identification. High schoolers help crippled cat walk again

"A group of robotics students in Colorado teamed up with a veterinarian to devise a life-saving solution for one crippled kitty. The cat, Flipper, suffered a spine fracture that left her unable to control her hind legs, making it impossible for her to get around, and putting her in danger being put to sleep. After running through a few models, the 'Blitz Robot' club at Conifer High School assembled a two-wheeled 'cat cart' that secured Flipper to a harness while allowing her to use her front legs to push herself without further damage." Pinhead Bureaucrats Threaten Family with Prison for Rescuing a Baby Deer

"When Connersville police officer Jeff Counceller first encountered the baby deer, she was curled up in the corner of a front porch. It was clear the fawn was injured. So the Councellers took in the deer, which they named Dani, cleaned and dressed its wounds and nursed it back to health. Trouble is, what the Councellers did is against the law. Now, more than two years after rescuing the deer, more than six months after conservation officers began an investigation, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources wants them prosecuted. …DNR officials began an investigation that entailed half a dozen visits to their home and numerous calls to local authorities." Louisiana Supermarket Forced to Increase Milk Price

"Mussolini interventionist government in action. Louisiana government officials have stopped a promotional sale on milk because state regulations require them to charge at least 6% above invoice and shipping costs. Fresh Markets in Perkins Rowe [Louisiana] was selling milk for $2.99 a gallon as part of a weekly promotion deal, but Louisiana requires that retailer markups be at least 6 percent above invoice and shipping costs, The Advocate reports. The over two year battle they’ve had with the Missouri Milk Board ended with a raid and confiscation of over 250 thousand dollars of inventory seized by the state. 12,000 Peaceful People Arrested in Italy for Not Paying Taxes; Police Discover Thriving Black Market

“Italy’s financial police said Thursday they had busted close to 12,000 people last year for evading over 56 billion euros ($74 billion) worth of taxes. Investigators rooted out 8,617 people who had never paid taxes and owed the Italian tax man a total of 22.7 billion euros, the financial police said in a statement. The crack down on tax evaders in Italy intensified when Prime Minister Mario Monti came to power at the end of 2011, as the government attempted to reduce the country’s deficit and debt. Dealers hijack Seattle’s gun buyback with makeshift gun show

"Following the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut last month, Seattle raised $120,000 to hold the first gun buyback effort in 20 years at a downtown parking lot on Saturday. The plan was to trade gift cards for guns that would later be destroyed, but a number of dealers set up a mini-gun show just a block away in a effort to buy up the guns and keep them in circulation. 'I pay cash, I don’t give Amazon gift cards,' one dealer told a gun seller in video captured by KING. Gun Ownership: American Exceptionalism

"The ownership of weapons in the United States by private citizens is not matched anywhere else in the world. Switzerland is close. The training is far better. The commitment of national defense by an armed electorate in Switzerland is like nothing else in the modern world. Being part of a citizen army is a matter of national pride. This is not the American tradition. The American tradition is far more a matter of individual autonomy, individual ownership of weapons, and not a matter of national pride. WI sheriff tells residents to get ‘in the game’ and arm themselves

"A Wisconsin sheriff has drawn criticism from other public officials for a radio commercial telling residents not to wait for authorities to help them and to arm themselves for protection. Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. can be heard in the ad saying, 'With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back.' Clarke also encourages residents to sign up for firearms training courses, saying, 'I need you in the game,' and, 'We’re partners now. Can I count on you?'" Continue reading →
