Russian central bank to keep buying gold

"The Russian central bank will continue to buy gold as it seeks to diversify its foreign reserves away from paper assets it views as risky, First Deputy Chairman Alexei Ulyukayev said on Thursday. The Bank of Russia has built up the world's fourth-largest foreign reserves, worth $530 billion, by buying oil export dollars to keep the rouble competitive. The hoard includes two rainy-day budget funds that guard against fiscal shocks. The bank has also been a bullion buyer and the share of gold in its reserves is approaching a medium-term target of 10 percent." Continue reading →

Fed Balance Sheet Hits Record $3 Trillion

"The size of the U.S. Federal Reserve's balance sheet reached a record, Fed data released on Thursday showed, due to the central bank's purchases of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities that are part of its unconventional policy aimed at supporting economic growth. The Fed's ownership of mortgage bonds guaranteed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Government National Mortgage Association (Ginnie Mae) totaled $983.2 billion, up from $947.61 billion the previous week. The Fed's holdings of Treasurys totaled $1.697 trillion as of Wednesday, higher than $1.689 trillion the previous week." Continue reading →

Last week the British firm that owns it decided to ban all visible references to assault weapons, so called. No sales, no advertising, nothing. A boycott began. The NRA canceled. Electricity prices for German households have increased 61% since 2000 – renewables blamed

"Real German electricity prices for households have increased 61% since 2000. One quarter of household costs now stems directly from renewable energy. Also, the increase is *not* because of increasing production costs (which have actually slightly declined since 1978). The increase is due to dramatically increasing taxes, most noticeably from the Renewable Energy Act (EEG). In 2013 the EEG will increase 50% to 6.28 euro-cent (5.28 cents plus 19% VAT). In June 2011, Chancellor Angela Merkel famously promised to keep EEG prices stable, but this promise has now clearly been broken.
