Small minds, big ideas: The implications of the IRS targeting anti-tax groups

"Any time you give a state agency a goal with an extremely broad, malleable definition, the agency is going to tend to interpret its mission as broadly as possible. And when that goal is inherently incompatible with a free society, the agency’s powers will inevitably grow at the expense of individual liberties and the rule of law. We shouldn’t trust the IRS to take as much money as it wants; we shouldn’t trust the military to invade the countries it thinks need to be invaded; and we shouldn’t trust the state security apparatus to 'keep us safe from terrorism.' "Beck said he's not an anti-war protestor, but declared that 'we need anti-war rallies' to push back against this, and people need to just ignore politicians like John McCain and President Obama dismissing opposition to intervention as coming from 'extremists.' Beck reminded the audience Obama's anti-war stance was one of the major things that secured his election, and pointed out that he was highly critical of Bush for similar tactics. "If President Obama can get us into war in Syria without prior Congressional approval, it will set a terrible precedent: A future president could get us more easily into war in Iran without prior Congressional approval. Tell President Obama and Congress: There must be no US military action in Syria without Congressional debate and authorization. Congress is out of session right now. But there is no emergency that requires immediate, unconstitutional, illegal action. If there were an emergency that required immediate action, Congress could be called back into session. UK gathers warplanes, military hardware in Cyprus base near Syria

"'Warplanes and military transporters' have reportedly been moved to Britain’s Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus in the latest sign of the allied forces’ preparations for a military strike on Syria amid bellicose rhetoric against the Syrian government. Two commercial pilots who regularly fly from Larnaca, Cyprus, claim to have spotted C-130 transport planes from their own aircraft and small formations of possibly European fighter jets from their radar screens, according to the Guardian. Akrotiri airbase is less than 100 miles from Syria, making it a likely hub for a bombing campaign. Residents near the airfield confirmed to the Guardian that 'activity there has been much higher than normal over the past 48 hours.'" Continue reading →

"I remember how devastated I felt as a young intelligence officer sitting in the Kuwaiti desert in early 2003 watching Colin Powell make the case to the United Nations for the invasion of Iraq.
