How IS That Whole European Union Thing Working Out?

Greek riot police are engulfed in flames, summer 2010

The whole concept of the European Union was a move to consolidate those countries into a single government structure with a common currency. To borrow some British slang, that sounds like a simply smashing idea, doesn’t it? If one believes in the notion of limited government and the only way to keep government limited is to keep it closest to the people, this whole consolidation concept seems contradictory. And as it turns out, the further away from the people government gets, the less accountable and more corrupt it becomes. In addition to having virtually forced the participation in the EU on the people of the member countries, the policies determined by the majority in power are literally hurting the member nations. This consolidated government concept is decidedly not working out very well.

Many of us are of course aware of the bailout of Greece earlier this year and the riots that swept through the country this summer as the government attempted to take some measures to rein in unsustainable spending (austerity).

Some predicted Greece would not be the last EU member to need a bailout, and of course, they were right. The EU nations have just agreed to provide an $89 billion bailout to Ireland.

In the YouTube video below, EU Parliament member of Great Britain, Nigel Farage, speaks very firmly against the EU’s policies:

(A transcript and analysis of the speech can be read HERE.)

This video and the current state of affairs in Europe is not simply a bit of interesting international news. If heeded, it could serve as a warning for America; elected officials who consistently proceed absent the support and consent of the government set a dangerous trend. Further, and perhaps more importantly, ever-expanding welfare state policies are not sustainable. Creating dependency among large numbers of people, especially when that large number includes a significant population of unassimilated immigrants is dangerous. When the system inevitably collapses, the dependent population, having come to believe they are entitled to government support, literally turns violent when the welfare is taken away.

This recent speech from Farage is by no means the first time he has spoken strenuously against the European Union. A search on YouTube reveals years of strident Farage speeches. Here is just a sampling:

2006: “Nigel Farage on who’s who in the EU commission

2008:  “Nigel Farage exposes Sarkozy

2009: “UKIP MP Nigel Farage stunning attack on PM Gordon Brown

2/2010: “Farage exposes euro-nationalist, communist government of Europe

Nigel Farage is a member of the UK Independence Party.

Shelli Dawdy is first and foremost the mother of three children whom she has taught at home via the classical method since removing her children from school in 2001. During her early years as a homeschool mother, she worked part-time as a freelance writer. Born and raised in the Iowa, Shelli and her husband moved to the state of South Dakota in 1997, attracted to its more limited government and friendly tax environment. In 2006, Shelli and her family relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, when her husband’s employer offered a new position. She took a break from work and politics for a time, recognizing the need to focus solely on her childrens’ schooling with two now of high school age. Distressed by many things she was witnessing on the national political scene and disillusioned about the Republican Party, she decided to start writing again, this time online. Motivated to get involved with others at the grassroots level, she networked with activists on the social media tool, Twitter. She was involved in organizing the first tea party rallies inspired by Rick Santelli’s “rant” on CNBC in February 2009. Recognizing that activism should generate on the local level, she founded Grassroots in Nebraska in March of 2009. The group’s mission is a return to Constitutional, limited government, according to its original meaning. While the group has held several tea party rallies, it’s focus is to take effective action. Among its many projects, GiN successfully coordinated testimony for the hearing of the Nebraska Sovereignty Resolution, networked with other groups to ensure a large show of public support at the hearing, and coordinated follow up support to ensure its passage in April 2010. While working to build up GiN throughout 2009, she was asked to work as writer and producer of the documentary film, A New America, which lays out how Progressivism is responsible for how America has moved away from its Constitutional roots.
