Opponents vote to shoot Egypt’s president Morsi into space

“Opponents of Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi are voting to send him where no Islamist leader has gone before: outer space. Morsi on Saturday was leading the field in Egypt in an online contest sponsored by deodorant makers Axe to send a lucky few on a shuttle operated by space tourism company Space Expedition Corp. Afghan president: U.S. special forces creating ‘insecurity and instability’

“Afghan President Hamid Karzai demanded Sunday the withdrawal of US special forces from Wardak within two weeks, accusing them of fuelling ‘insecurity and instability’ in the volatile province neighbouring the capital Kabul. ‘In today’s national security council meeting… President Karzai ordered the ministry of defence to kick out the US special forces from Wardak province within two weeks,’ said presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi. ‘The US special forces and illegal armed groups created by them are causing insecurity, instability, and harass local people in this province,’ he told a press conference.” Continue reading →

Locksmiths and firemen refuse to aid evictions in Spain

“Locksmiths and firemen in Spain are rebelling against a wave of evictions in the economic crisis by refusing to help bailiffs open ruined homeowners’ doors to throw them out. A wave of evictions of mortgage-holders ruined by the recession has prompted several suicides and sparked a protest movement that last week brought a motion to parliament for a law to end the procedure. With the locksmiths refusing to take part, some authorities have been asking the fire service to step in and break open the doors of those resisting eviction. Investigation ordered after Spanish politicians got ‘salaries’ from private companies

“Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy ordered Monday an internal investigation into the finances of his centre-right Popular Party which was shaken by allegations of under-the-table payments to party officials. The centre-right newspaper El Mundo reported Friday that senior members of the party, which Rajoy has led since 2004, had received undeclared salaries, mainly from private companies, over a 20-year period. Citing unnamed former members of the Popular Party leadership, the newspaper said the party’s former treasurer Luis Barcenas distributed envelopes containing thousands of euros to party officials on top of their official salaries.” Continue reading →

China ousts police chief ‘who owns hundreds of houses’

“A Chinese police chief has been sacked after reports he owned hundreds of houses and a false identity card, state media said Wednesday in the latest scandal to fuel public outrage over corruption. Zhao Haibin was stripped of his public offices for ‘engaging in business deals using a fake identity card’, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Lufeng city government in the southern province of Guangdong. Chinese revolt over government plan to ban BBQ in order to fight epic smog problem

“China web-users were furious Thursday over plans to tackle pollution with a ban on barbecues, wryly asking if Beijing would stamp out fried food and normal bodily functions in its war on smog. The controversial measure is being explored as Beijing aims to confront the heavy pollution which has choked large swathes of the country in recent weeks. State media said Wednesday that the country’s environmental watchdog had issued draft guidelines advising major cities to adopt legislation banning ‘barbecue-related activities’. “China has no desire to fight the United States unless absolutely necessary, and less to spark a US trade embargo. China holds over $1 trillion in US government debt. Beijing has no desire to panic all of East Asia. A war over the Senkaku/Diaoyus would be like the 1998-2000 desert war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, described as ‘two bald men fighting over a comb.’ No matter how much fish swim around the Senkakus, or how much oil and gas may be found underwater, nothing justifies a war. “Let’s You and Him Fight,” Japan’s Prime Minister Tells Obama.

“Japan has a few useless islands that China is trying to get by force. Abe wants the U.S. to back Japan in keeping these islands. ‘Let’s you and him fight.’ He is also concerned that North Korea keeps launching missiles. ‘Tell them to stop.’ America pays for Japan’s defense because (1) we need Japan to keep useless islands away from China, and (2) we need a port for our carriers, so that the boys can let off a little steam on shore leave.
