Why Your Town Is Going Broke

“Cook County’s Treasurer has created a website where citizens can find out how far in the hole their governments are. They are all so far in debt that future taxpayers will lose their homes, she says: ‘In May, 2012, the collective debt reported by the local primary taxing agencies in Cook County was more than $140 billion! To put that in context, the total debt-per-household in the City of Chicago was $87,720, and $35,774 in the suburbs. Homeowners might be able to give their homes to their children, but that future generation won’t be able to afford to keep them because of the property taxes, which have doubled over a 10-year period.'” Continue reading

The Internet Has Been Conquered: Get Busy With the Next Steps

“For years, people like me have been telling everyone who will listen that they need to start using encryption and to stop cooperating with the strangling of the Internet. Sadly, not many people cared. They were far more interested in free services and shiny new iGadgets. Ah well… at least I did my part. My point today is this: It’s over. The state has won. The Internet will be fully controlled in just a few years. Actually, it’s worse than that. Within that same amount of time, the Internet will not only be a Worldwide Surveillance Web, but it will be a Worldwide Manipulation Web.” Continue reading

U.S. ranked 32nd in press freedom index

“Reporters Without Borders on Wednesday launched a new indicator measuring global press freedom by aggregating the scores of its annual index, from perennial table-topping Finland to worst offenders Eritrea. ‘In view of the emergence of new technologies and the interdependence of governments and peoples, the freedom to produce and circulate news and information needs to be evaluated at the planetary as well as national level,’ the Paris-based watchdog said. Northern European countries topped the rankings of its separate Press Freedom Index, while the small, reclusive African nation of Eritrea came last.” Continue reading

EU Financial Tax Portends Loss of Market Leadership

“Although limited presently in scope and at an apparently low rate, the tax will nevertheless provide an extra layer of financial bureaucracy that will dissuade some market participants from transacting in the Eurozone. More importantly, the measure is a ‘supra national’ tax that helps to pave the way towards a global taxation system. Not only will such a system be economically damaging, but it will be devoid largely of effective democratic accountability. At a time when governments should be encouraging the free flow of capital, this measure moves us exactly in the wrong direction.” Continue reading

Government to Dispose of Radioactive Waste By Putting It In Our Silverware

“The Department of Energy – the agency which is responsible for the design, testing and production of all U.S. nuclear weapons, promotes nuclear energy as one of its core functions, which has been covering up nuclear accidents for decades, and has used mutant lines of human cells to promote voodoo, anti-scientific arguments – proposes letting radiation into our silverware.” Continue reading

High schoolers help crippled cat walk again

“A group of robotics students in Colorado teamed up with a veterinarian to devise a life-saving solution for one crippled kitty. The cat, Flipper, suffered a spine fracture that left her unable to control her hind legs, making it impossible for her to get around, and putting her in danger being put to sleep. After running through a few models, the ‘Blitz Robot’ club at Conifer High School assembled a two-wheeled ‘cat cart’ that secured Flipper to a harness while allowing her to use her front legs to push herself without further damage.” Continue reading

Dealers hijack Seattle’s gun buyback with makeshift gun show

“Following the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut last month, Seattle raised $120,000 to hold the first gun buyback effort in 20 years at a downtown parking lot on Saturday. The plan was to trade gift cards for guns that would later be destroyed, but a number of dealers set up a mini-gun show just a block away in a effort to buy up the guns and keep them in circulation. ‘I pay cash, I don’t give Amazon gift cards,’ one dealer told a gun seller in video captured by KING. ‘It’s a historical firearm, I would hate to see it get destroyed,’ a buyer remarked to another gun owner. ‘I’ll give you $100 cash for it.'” Continue reading
