Legalise ganja to treat HIV, cancer, doctors tell gov’t

“Director of the Caribbean Drug and Alcohol Research Institute Dr Marcus Day believes the time has come for regional governments to legalise marijuana to counteract the spread of HIV. ‘Cannabis actually keeps viral progression down in a body. If you are HIV positive and you are not on medication, smoking cannabis is actually therapeutic, and that’s science, not people’s opinion,’ he said. Day believes HIV patients — especially those not on anti-retroviral drugs — should be allowed to ingest marijuana as a tea or in pastry such as brownies. Statistics show that approximately 30% of those living with HIV in the Caribbean are not on any type of treatment.” Continue reading

Oakland Insists It Can Defend Medical Pot Club

“The city of Oakland renewed demands to stay forfeiture proceedings against a local medical marijuana dispensary whose business it defends as a matter of state’s rights. Though the U.S. government says that Oakland lacks standing to try to block it from seizing Harborside Health Center, the city argued that it has an interest in protecting its economic and public health interests, and it says a stay would serve the orderly adjudication of justice. The U.S. government initiated forfeiture proceedings against Harborside Health Center’s Oakland and San Jose locations in July, claiming the clubs sell marijuana in violation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).” Continue reading

“The family of the woman who died after being booted in the groin while being arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department has filed a lawsuit demanding footage of the fatal encounter be released. ‘I go to sleep and I think of her and it is horrible because I know they really inflicted a lot of pain on my daughter,’ Sandra Thomas said Monday, according to KABC-TV. Legal Gun Owners in New York Outed Like Sex Offenders

“A corporate media owned website in New York has posted the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in three counties in the state. Data for all permit categories, unrestricted carry, premises, business, employment, target and hunting, is included, but permit information is not available on an individual basis. The Journal News submitted Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties. It used Google Maps to pinpoint specific locations and included the names and addresses of permit holders, without specifying a reason for invading the privacy of handgun owners.” Continue reading

Former Dallas cop sentenced to nearly 4 years in prison for Crime Stoppers scam

“Theodora Ross, the former Dallas police senior corporal who ran the department’s Crime Stoppers program, was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison today for stealing at least $175,000 from the program. Beginning in 2005 and through early 2010, Ross would give bogus tip information to an accomplice, Malva Delley, who collected cash rewards from the bank. Delley would collect the proceeds of the bogus tips and would then ‘divide the cash, per Ross’s instructions, and deliver Ross’s share of the illegally obtained money by either directly depositing cash into Ross’s Bank of America bank account or by giving cash directly to Ross.'” Continue reading

Grandmother Struck and Killed by Drunk Driving NY Officer

“A former NYPD detective — whose BAC was more than three times the legal limit when he plowed into a Bronx grandmother with a cop car — was convicted of manslaughter yesterday. Former Detective Kevin Spellman, however, beat the rap on the most serious charges against him (aggravated vehicular homicide and first-degree vehicular manslaughter) in the death of 66-year-old Drane Nikac. Following the accident, Spellman refused a breathalyzer test, and his BAC wasn’t tested until five hours after he slammed into the Bronx grandmother while driving erratically in his NYPD-owned Chevy Impala.” Continue reading

Rape victim Sara Reedy, accused of lying and jailed by U.S. police, wins $1.5 million payout

“The man entered the petrol station near Pittsburgh where she was working to pay her way through college and pulled a gun. He emptied the till of its $606.73 takings, assaulted her and fled into the night. But the detective who interviewed Reedy in hospital didn’t believe her, and accused her of stealing the money herself and inventing the story as a cover-up. Although another local woman was attacked not long after in similar fashion, the police didn’t join the dots. Following further inquiries, Reedy was arrested for theft and false reporting and, pregnant with her first child (by her now ex-husband), thrown in jail. She was subsequently released on bail, but lost her job.” Continue reading

Suicide underscores grim conditions at Guantanamo

“The suicide of a Guantanamo inmate underscores the grim reality for detainees held there for nearly 11 years without charge or trial, with no end in sight to their imprisonment. Three months after Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif was found dead in his cell, the US Army formally declared his death to be a suicide — the seventh at the prison. How, Remes would like to know, did the prisoner manage to die at the tightly-controlled facility of a self-administered drug overdose, as the autopsy report cites as the cause? And how could an inmate suffering from acute pneumonia be languishing in a disciplinary cell without medical care?” Continue reading
