Behind Google’s mission to map the world

“Eight years ago, Google bought a cool little graphics business called Keyhole, which had been working on 3D maps. Along with the acquisition came Brian McClendon, aka ‘Bam’, a tall and serious Kansan who in a previous incarnation had supplied high-end graphics software that Hollywood used in films including Jurassic Park and Terminator 2. It turned out to be a very smart move. Today McClendon is Google’s Mr Maps – presiding over one of the fastest-growing areas in the search giant’s business, one that has recently left arch-rival Apple red-faced and threatens to make Google the most powerful company in mapping the world has ever seen.” Continue reading

Obama’s inauguration committee to accept corporate cash

“President Obama’s inauguration in January will be funded in part by corporate cash, a reversal from 2008 when he declined corporate donations and capped individual donations to $50,000. Donations from both corporate donors and individuals to the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Committee will not have an upper limit, although the committee will not take funds from PACs or lobbyists. President of Public Citizen, Robert Weissman, told the Post, ‘It’s not a bribe’ but ‘they’re going to expect access and the ability to have their views heard more favorably than they otherwise would be. And that’s not how the system should work.'” Continue reading

UK tax hitmen to track your spending

“Credit reference agencies will cross-check details of the income people declare on their tax returns against their spending patterns to identify ‘high’ and ‘medium’ risks of both illegal and legal tax avoidance. About two million people are expected to be scrutinised under the programme, which may lead to privacy concerns. Treasury sources said that ‘hundreds of millions’ are expected to be raised from the greater use of third-party data, such as that supplied by credit reference agencies. Information will also be routinely shared between the British and American authorities.” Continue reading

RTW Bills Pass! What is Next?

Yesterday was truly an historic day for Michigan. Last night I was at the Capitol as the Senate passed their RTW bill (the House had passed theirs earlier in the day) while Union “activists” chanted “Shame on You”. As a liberty loving UAW retiree I can honestly say I have waited for this day for …

Ninth Circuit Gives the A-OK For Warrantless Home Video Surveillance

“Can law enforcement enter your house and use a secret video camera to record the intimate details inside? On Tuesday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals unfortunately answered that question with ‘yes.’ On suspicion of nothing more than the benign misdemeanor of selling eagle feathers, the government got to intrude inside the home and record every intimate detail it could: books on a shelf, letters on a coffee table, pictures on a wall.” Continue reading

Equality Under the Law

In failing to give due consideration to the proper role of government, both our nation and our state are sliding down the proverbial slope towards what?  Less prosperity, lower productivity, higher unemployment, losses of freedom, insurmountable public burdens of debt just to name a few of the maladies associated with impoverished society and to which we are precipitously headed.  A prime example of this failure was highlighted in this past Sunday’s New York Times, “Lines … Continue reading

Former Microsoft exec plans high-end marijuana business

“A former Microsoft executive and Washington state resident is planning to enter the upscale marijuana business, in the hopes that it will help bring some respectability to the industry, reported KiroTV. Jamen Shively plans to name his business after his grandfather, who supplied hemp rope to the Spanish Armada at the time of the Spanish-American War. ‘By creating the category of premium marijuana, we want to position it similar to a fine cognac, a fine brandy, a fine cigar,’ Shively told KiroTV.” Continue reading
