NSA Refuses To Release Secret Obama Directive On Cybersecurity

“An article in the Washington Post cited several US officials saying that Obama signed off on the secret cybersecurity order, believed to widely expand NSA’s spying authorities, in mid-October. In response to the move, lawyers with the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request (PDF) demanding that the Obama administration make public the text of the directive. The NSA responded to the FOIA request this week with a statement arguing that it does not have to release the document because it is a confidential presidential communication and it is classified.” Continue reading

Anarchist Defeats Minarchist in New Hampshire Election

“When Ward 5 of Manchester, New Hampshire, elected a delegate to the state legislature this month, its voters rejected a Republican from the Free State Project who favors a minimal government. Instead they picked Tim O’Flaherty, a Democrat from the Free State Project who favors the abolition of government altogether. In the words of the Manchester Union-Leader: ‘O’Flaherty ran against a fellow Free Stater, housemate Dan Garthwaite, whom O’Flaherty called a statist.’ Meanwhile, in Vermont, voters in the town of Randolph have just made my left-anarchist friend Jessamyn West a justice of the peace.” Continue reading

Legal logjam lets troubled cops keep their badges

“Police officers punished for serious misconduct by the state may continue to draw their pay and even carry a badge for years if they appeal the sanctions. Spain considers automatic residency to foreign home buyers

“Spain may offer automatic residency to foreigners such as Chinese and Russians who buy homes in the country, aiming to help the ruined housing market, a government official said Monday. ‘We have proposed to the other ministries that for residents who acquire a home in Spain for more than 160,000 euros ($205,000), that will automatically entail a residency permit,’ said junior trade minister Jaime Garcia-Legaz. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy later told a news conference that ‘no decision’ had yet been taken on formally launching the scheme, but said that Spain’s stock of unsold housing needed to be sold at ‘reasonable prices’.” Continue reading

“The letter, sent on November 13, informs her father that the Smart ID program, which was phased in with the new school year, is now in ‘full implementation’ and requires all students to comply by wearing the location-tracking badges. Since Andrea Hernandez has refused to wear the badge, she is being withdrawn from the magnet school and her program at the Science and Engineering Academy, and instead will have to attend William Howard Taft HS, which is not currently involved in the ID scheme, unless she changes her position.” Continue reading
