Battle Over Shotspotter Surveillance Tech in San Diego Underscores Need for Oversight

San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit asked the city council to approve a new contract for Shotspotter audio technology without any process to address community concerns. Community pushback led by the TRUST SD Coalition was enough to get the contract renewal pulled from the council agenda last month.

Signed as Law: Illinois Limits State and Local Cooperation With Federal Immigration Enforcement

The new law expands the Illinois Trust Act passed in 2017 prohibiting state and local police from holding a person solely on the basis of a federal immigration detainer. SB667 expands the law to prohibit law enforcement officers from inquiring about or investigating the citizenship, immigration status, or place of birth of any individual in custody, or who has otherwise been stopped or detained.

PBS News Hour Highlights “Defend the Guard” Initiative

Some state legislators have been introducing bills to ban their state from deploying National Guard units for undeclared foreign wars. To date, Defend the Guard bills have been introduced in some 30 states. PBS News Hour Special Correspondent Mike Cerre reported on this movement in July and spoke with Dan McKnight who is helping drive the initiative.
