John Kerry: Science on climate change is ‘irrefutable and it is alarming’

“US Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday the evidence for climate change was beyond dispute but it was not too late for international action to prevent its worst impacts. ‘The science is clear. It is irrefutable and it is alarming,’ Kerry told a climate conference in Majuro in the Marshall Islands in a video address from Washington. ‘If we continue down our current path, the impacts of climate change will only get worse.’ Kerry said without strong, immediate action, the world would experience threats to critical infrastructure, regional stability, public health, economic vitality, and the long-term viability of some states.” Continue reading

Kerry: U.S. has firm evidence sarin gas was used in Syria attack

“‘Each day that goes by,’ Kerry said, ‘this case is getting stronger. I mean, today I’m at liberty to tell you that we now have samples back from first responders in East Damascus – those samples of hair and blood have been tested, and they have reported positive for signatures of sarin. So, we are now getting a stronger case each day. The credibility of the United States is on the line here and I believe that Congress will do the right thing.'” Continue reading

Glenn Greenwald: Obama, Congress and Syria

“The Congressional vote which Obama said he would seek appears, in his mind, to have no binding force at all. There is no reason to believe that a Congressional rejection of the war’s authorization would constrain Obama in any way, other than perhaps politically. To the contrary, there is substantial evidence for the proposition that the White House sees the vote as purely advisory, i.e., meaningless. Recall how – in one of most overlooked bad acts of the Obama administration – the House of Representatives actually voted, overwhelmingly, against authorizing the US war in Libya, and yet Obama simply ignored the vote and proceeded to prosecute the war anyway.” Continue reading

Obama Refers to U.S. Armed Forces as ‘My Military’

“In case you missed it, President Obama referred to the United States armed forces as ‘my military’ during a statement to the media regarding the Syrian crisis Friday. ‘But as I’ve already said,’ Obama noted, ‘I have had my military and our team look at a wide range of options.’ And Twitter users went and got themselves into a bit of a twist. What do you think? Innocent semantics, a slip of the tongue…or something else?” Continue reading

Gorbachev warns of Syrian intervention risks

“Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said in Geneva on Monday that US President Barack Obama was right to seek backing from Congress for military action in Syria, but he warned that intervening raised dire risks. ‘If he’s not decisive enough in shooting and bombing, I think it’s a good kind of indecisiveness,’ Gorbachev told a conference of Green Cross International, a peace and environmental organisation he founded in 1993, two years after his Kremlin ouster. ‘If, however, they decide to shoot without regard for the opinion of the people everywhere, including the United States, then I think the consequences could be very bad,’ he warned.” Continue reading

Mother, daughter sentenced for Internet scam targeting U.S. military supporters

“A Colorado mother and daughter were sentenced on Wednesday for their roles in a ‘Nigerian internet romance scam.’ Karen and Tracy Vasseur were convicted of stealing more than $1 million from 374 victims who thought they were sending money to aid members of the U.S. military. Unknown conspirators in Nigeria would establish online relationships with victims via e-mail or social media by sending them fake military documents and personal photographs. After the relationship was established, the purported military member would request large sums of money, ostensibly for satellite phones that would allow them to speak to the victims or travel funds that would allow them to visit.” Continue reading
