First-ever music video filmed in space is David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’

“In an amazing video published Sunday by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, he bids farewell to the International Space Station with the most epic cover of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ perhaps ever, in footage that will go down as the first music video filmed in space. The ISS commander has made a habit of publishing YouTube videos from far above Earth showing the amazing properties of zero gravity living and the difficulties it presents astronauts in doing common tasks like clipping their fingernails or wringing out a wet rag. Hadfield and two other astronauts are set to leave the ISS on May 14, after spending six months at the station.” Continue reading

Richard Branson: Space tourism won’t hurt environment

“More than 500 people have already reserved seats — and paid deposits on the $200,000 ticket price — for a minutes-long suborbital flight on the SpaceShipTwo (SS2) set to begin by the end of this year. ‘We have reduced the (carbon emission) cost of somebody going into space from something like two weeks of New York’s electricity supply… to less than the cost of a economy round-trip from Singapore to London,’ Branson told reporters in Singapore. The SS2′s lightweight carbon-fibre body will also ‘reduce fuel burn dramatically’, he said.” Continue reading

Tesla Motors now more valuable than Italian auto giant Fiat

“The rocketing stock price of electric sports car maker Tesla made it more valuable than Fiat Tuesday — even though the Italian auto giant produces 200 times more cars than the American upstart. After a more than 50 percent gain in the past week, Tesla’s market value topped $10 billion, compared to the Turin giant’s $8 billion, as investors reacted to the company turning a profit in the first quarter and analysts boosting their forecasts. The shares were up 55 percent in one week and 150 percent since the beginning of the year, after struggling through 2012 on production delays and questions about whether it could turn a profit.” Continue reading

Does This Make America Less Free Than Slovakia?

“Would your grandparents have ever said that Slovakia is freer than America? Most likely not, but today the story is a little different. Decent Americans have their lives ruined, their business closed, their property confiscated, and often wind up in jail simply because they want to produce clean milk for people who realize what a load of rubbish pasteurized ‘milk’ is. In Slovakia, a country that has been little more than two decades out of authoritarian rule, we see a very different picture and boy does that make me scratch my head, because the country I grew up considering the freest country in the world really doesn’t sound like it in this example.” Continue reading

Erie County Sheriff Howard on SAFE Act: ‘I won’t enforce it’

“It’s no secret Sheriff Timothy B. Howard is opposed to New York’s new gun-control law. But Howard, who is running for re-election this year, is now ratcheting up his opposition by filing a friend of the court brief in the lawsuit seeking to overturn the SAFE Act and, even more important perhaps, by suggesting the law not be enforced. ‘I’m more than reluctant,’ he said of the new law Thursday. ‘I won’t enforce it.’ Howard, one of four sheriffs who joined in filing the brief this week, said he considers the law unconstitutional and a waste of valuable resources, and believes it will ultimately be overturned by the courts.” Continue reading

The World’s First $1 Million Bitcoin Mining Auction

“A bitcoin mining company just sold more than $1,000,000 worth of hardware. ASICMiner is a publicly traded bitcoin company that both operates and sells bitcoin mining hardware. In their latest auction they successfully sold 180 ASIC mining blades for 49.99 bitcoins (BTC) each. Friedcat, the CEO, announced two weeks ago that they would be selling usb-powered mining devices for 1.99 BTC each. There is clearly a lot of demand for bitcoin mining hardware. The question in any gold rush is who will do better: the people mining, or the people selling the shovels? ASICMiner decided they can do both.” Continue reading

It’s Time for Private Defense

“If the Cleveland Police Department had believed and convinced a judge that there were drugs being consumed or sold in the Castro home, a battering ram would have collapsed the front door years ago. A dozen cops from various agencies would have stormed the place. Police don’t take those kinds of chances with a less sexy crime like kidnapping. So while government maintains a monopoly on policing power, its finances don’t allow it to do the job adequately. Police departments prioritize chasing drugs, cash, and terrorists. Because of asset forfeiture laws, those are the crimes that pay.” Continue reading

Hedge funds selling gold ‘in a big way’

“Hedge funds and other big speculators in commodities have started selling gold in a big way, trade data showed on Friday, just a month after they had supported the precious metal amid a record tumble in its price. Money managers, including hedge funds, pulled $1.4 billion from the U.S. gold futures market for the week ended May 14 by trimming their net long positions in the metal, according to Reuters calculations of data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Open interest, a measure of market liquidity, fell more than 3 percent in the week to May 14 for gold contracts traded by money managers on the COMEX.” Continue reading
