Gene wars: the last-ditch battle over who owns the rights to our DNA

“US biotechnology giant Myriad Genetics is demanding that the US supreme court back the patents it has taken out on the BRAC genes. The company believes it should be the only producer of tests to detect mutations in these genes, a business it has carried out in the United States for more than a decade. On the other side, a group of activists, represented by lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union, argues that it is fundamentally absurd and immoral to claim ownership of humanity’s shared genetic heritage and demands that the court ban patents.” Continue reading

Google CEO Schmidt calls for end to private drone use

“‘It’s probable that robotics becomes a significant component of nation state warfare,’ he said. ‘I’m not going to pass judgment on whether armies should exist, but I would prefer to not spread and democratise the ability to fight war to every single human being. ‘It’s got to be regulated. You just can’t imagine that British people would allow this sort of thing, and I can’t imagine American people would allow this sort of thing. It’s one thing for governments, who have some legitimacy in what they’re doing, but have other people doing it … It’s not going to happen.'” Continue reading

Death toll in Texas fertilizer plant explosion rises to 14

“The tiny Texas town of West continues to struggle to come to terms with the Wednesday fire and explosion at a local fertilizer plant. According to the Associated Press, recovery workers have now pulled 14 bodies from the wreckage, ten of whom were first responders who had rushed to the scene of the fire. Donations of clothing and household items are piling up at local hotels and other donor centers. Texas politicians Gov. Rick Perry (R) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R) have both called upon the federal government to rush aid to the area in spite of both men’s avowed devotion to the idea of ‘small government.'” Continue reading

U.S. and Russia to bolster ties after Boston bombings

“Russia and the United States agreed Saturday to step up cooperation in their fight against terror in the wake of news that two ethnic Chechens were suspected of organising the deadly Boston Marathon bombings. The Kremlin said Russian leader Vladimir Putin called US President Barack Obama to once again express his condolences and discuss ways the two sides can work more closely on security in the runup to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. ‘I think that contacts will be conducted between our intelligence services,’ Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in separate televised remarks.” Continue reading

Chechnya Isn’t Czechoslovakia

“All day I was wondering what the heck the deal was and at about 11 pm I figured it out. On Facebook, I found this – a link to a list if tweets that in some way confused Czechoslovakia and Chechnya. Traffic was spiking so heavily because people were confusing the ethnically Chechen Boston bombing suspects with the no longer existent country of Czechoslovakia. I would like to reaffirm the important statement that there has been no such place as Czechoslovakia for over two decades. Maybe we need to better challenge a few trends in our society if we are calling authoritatively for the bombing of countries that don’t even exist.” Continue reading

Chechens?

“From Monday when I first heard of the bombs I was certain that ‘the terrorists’ would turn out to be with the Provisional wing of the IRA (being Boston and such), with their cell headed by a burly red-head named Paddy O’Furniture. But Chechens are just as befuddling and obscure to the masses and will provide the evil Muslim angle to dangle before the blood-thirsty wolves and the complaisant sheep that still pay attention to the regime’s mainstream media disinformation brigade. We are truly living out the script for V for Vendetta, complete with constant false-flag terrorist incidents and militarized police thugs, all geared to enhance fear and government repression.” Continue reading

“An eighth grade student from West Virginia has been arrested, suspended and faces charges for wearing an NRA T-shirt with the image of a firearm and the words ‘Protect Your Right’ printed on it to school. ‘I never thought it would go this far because honestly I don’t see a problem with this. There shouldn’t be a problem with this,’ Marcum told WOWK-TV. Police confirmed that Marcum had been arrested and faced charges of obstruction and disturbing the education process after getting into an argument over the shirt with a teacher at Logan Middle School, which is south of Charleston.” Continue reading
