High Bail for Marijuana Raid Arrests Sparks Questions

"Three of four people arrested are still behind bars with bail at roughly half-a-million dollars each. Questions are arising about why their bail is so high in comparison to others. 'Bail will remain set $550,000' said Judge Tim Barnack. After he announced his decision, supporters of Lori and Leland Duckworth as well as David Bond made their discontent known in the courtroom. Comparing their bail to others on the Jackson County Jail inmate list, bail is $250,000 dollars for an individual accused of encouraging child sex abuse. Another person, charged with 3rd degree robbery, misdemeanor strangulation and 4th degree assault has bail set at $80,000." Continue reading

Duval has a kidney and pancreas transplant, as well as glaucoma and neuropathy. His family grew marijuana on his Michigan farm in part to treat his ailments. But when the Department of Justice prosecuted him in federal court, Duval was barred from presenting evidence of his compliance with Michigan's medical marijuana law. Miami-Dade Police Choke Black Teenager Because He Was Giving Them “Dehumanizing Stares”

"Fourteen-year-old Tremaine McMillian didn't threaten police. He didn't attack them. He wasn't armed. All the black teenager did was appear threatening by shooting Miami-Dade police officers a few 'dehumanizing stares,' and that was apparently enough for the officers to decide to slam him against the ground and put him in a chokehold. McMillian says he was carrying a six-week old puppy at the time and couldn't have been clenching his fists because he was feeding the dog with a bottle. He claims that during the confrontation the dog's front left paw was injured. The teen was charged with a felony count of resisting arrest with violence and disorderly conduct." Continue reading

Imprisoned CIA Torture Whistleblower John Kiriakou Pens “Letter from Loretto”

"Greetings from the Federal Correctional Institution at Loretto, Pennsylvania. I arrived here on February 28, 2013 to serve a 30-month sentence for violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982. At least that’s what the government wants people to believe. In truth, this is my punishment for blowing the whistle on the CIA’s illegal torture program and for telling the public that torture was official U.S. government policy. But that’s a different story. The purpose of this letter is to tell you about prison life." Continue reading

The EU Joins the Syrian War More Directly

"U.S. Secretary of State Kerry went to Europe urging that the European Union drop its embargo on shipments of heavy arms into the hands of the Syrian rebels. Are we surprised that the EU has now done exactly that? The article says 'British Foreign Secretary William Hague says the amended embargo puts pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to seek a non-military solution to more than two years of fighting.' Remember that a political process occurred in February of 2012 when a new Syrian constitution was passed overwhelmingly. The EU's decision affirms that the EU intends violently to overthrow Assad in violation of their oaths in the U.N." Continue reading

Rand Paul: Senate Is Arming Al-Qaeda and Rushing to War in Syria

"'This is an important moment. You will be funding, today, the allies of al Qaeda.' That was the declaration Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.; pictured) made on May 21 during a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Paul’s comments were directed at his colleagues, nearly all of whom voted to send arms to Syrian rebels. Senators Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) co-sponsored the bill that authorizes 'critical support to the Syrian opposition through provision of military assistance, training, and additional humanitarian support.' The bill sailed through the committee, passing with bipartisan support by a vote of 15-3." Continue reading

Did Senator McCain Violate NDAA by Hanging Out with Syrian Rebels?

"In fact, the same day President Obama announced our recognition of the opposition, rebel groups across Syria signed a petition pledging allegiance to the Jihad and asking America by name not to intervene. It’s hard to imagine that twelve years after 9/11, Senator McCain would be calling for US foreign and military aid be given to 'the Jihad.' Interestingly enough, this is the same Senator McCain who championed NDAA 2012, which gives our government the right to indefinitely detain Americans for doing exactly what he did: supporting elements aligned with al-Qaeda."
