Dealers hijack Seattle’s gun buyback with makeshift gun show

"Following the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut last month, Seattle raised $120,000 to hold the first gun buyback effort in 20 years at a downtown parking lot on Saturday. The plan was to trade gift cards for guns that would later be destroyed, but a number of dealers set up a mini-gun show just a block away in a effort to buy up the guns and keep them in circulation. 'I pay cash, I don’t give Amazon gift cards,' one dealer told a gun seller in video captured by KING. 'It’s a historical firearm, I would hate to see it get destroyed,' a buyer remarked to another gun owner. 'I’ll give you $100 cash for it.'" Continue reading →

WI sheriff tells residents to get ‘in the game’ and arm themselves

"A Wisconsin sheriff has drawn criticism from other public officials for a radio commercial telling residents not to wait for authorities to help them and to arm themselves for protection. Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. can be heard in the ad saying, 'With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back.' NYPD Comissioner Ray Kelly: Police to use Tera-Hertz scanners within six months

"The New York Police Department will begin using scanner technology that can see through a person’s clothes within the year, according to Commissioner Ray Kelly. 'We’ve been looking at it for several years, looking at it with the Department of Defense, and also Metropolitan Police in London,' he said on CBS News’ Face the Nation. New technology called Tera-Hertz scanners or T-Ray machines can be used to detect whether a person is carrying a concealed firearm. "A secretive cellphone spy device known as StingRay, intended to fight terrorism, was used in far more routine LAPD criminal investigations 21 times in a four-month period during 2012, apparently without the courts' knowledge that the technology probes the lives of non-suspects who happen to be in the same neighborhood as suspected terrorists. StingRay, which allows police to track mobile phones in real time, was tapped for more than 13 percent of the 155 'cellular phone investigation cases' last year.
