John Kerry invokes apocalyptic ‘domino theory’ in call with House Democrats

"In a Labor Day conference call with 127 House Democrats, Secretary of State John Kerry invoked an apocalyptic scenario, summoning visions of American power and credibility incinerated in a terrible Middle East-wide conflagration laced with nerve gas and enriched uranium. Kerry warned that the failure to punish Bashar Al-Assad for using chemical weapons on Syrian civilians could lead to future chemical attacks on Israel and Turkey, emboldening Iran to forge ahead with an alleged nuclear weapons program and perhaps even enter the battlefield in support of Syria. Next, Kerry hammered on the Holocaust, declaring that the US faced a 'Munich moment' on Syria." Continue reading

Selling Syria: White House pleads with Congress for ‘limited’ strikes

"On Tuesday, Secretary of State John Kerry plead his case on why the US should launch limited attacks on Syria in retaliation for Pres. Bashar al-Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons on his own people. According to Kerry, not stepping in would only embolden other countries with weapons of mass destruction, and senators expressed their concerns that getting involved in Syria would only lead to another endless war in the Middle East. Sam Sacks is on Capitol Hill with a summary of the day's events." Continue reading

Bitcoin in India: Drivers and Barriers to Adoption

"Bitcoin’s growth in 2013 has accelerated tremendously, driven largely by economic concerns which bitcoin is uniquely positioned to solve. This has been evidenced so far this year by conditions in Cyprus, China and Argentina, and has highlighted bitcoin’s potential in less developed nations likeKenya as well. All of the countries listed above are known for high inflation rates, strict capital controls, or a combination of both – a scenario that is beginning to unfold in India. This analysis will address India’s current economic climate and the factors that would affect the population’s propensity to adopt bitcoin on a large scale." Continue reading

Raspberry Pi used in new Bitcoin-operated pool table

"Games room specialist Liberty Games has created a bitcoin-operated pool table that runs on Raspberry Pi. Next to the table’s traditional coin slot, there is a QR code and an LCD screen, which displays the price per play in bitcoins. Users simply scan the QR code and send the displayed amount to the owner’s bitcoin wallet address. The machine then automatically tips the balls out – they don’t have to be manually released. The company, which ships worldwide, is now looking at adding bitcoin payment options to a number of its other products, which include jukeboxes and pinball machines. Next on the list, though, is an arcade machine." Continue reading
