L.A. County Sheriff Awards Carry Permits to Friends, Donors

"Public records show Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, who is known for being stingy with concealed-weapons permits in an anti-gun jurisdiction, may be giving out permits disproportionately to his friends and political supporters and donors. L.A. Weekly obtained public records for all of the 341 active concealed-weapons permits in addition to the 123 applications for permits that were denied over the last 18 months. The records show that of all the people who were denied a permit, only one had contributed to Baca. Ohio Attorney General rejects ballot measure to legalize marijuana

"A ballot measure that would legalize marijuana in Ohio was rejected on Monday by the state’s attorney general, who said the petition was not ' fair and truthful.' The group Responsible Ohioans for Cannabis collected enough signatures to submit the ballot measure to Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine’s office for approval. The ballot measure would have allowed voters in Ohio to approve or reject the End Ohio Cannabis Prohibition Act in the next election." Continue reading →

"Colonel Denise Lind, 'judge' of the court martial of PFC Bradley Manning, infamously and illegally ruled that the US government could proceed with its show trial despite the fact that it had held Manning for more than four times the absolute legal maximum time prior to arraigning him. Then she infamously and illegally ruled that the government could change the charges and introduce new witnesses after both prosecution and defense had rested. Now, she has infamously and illegally overruled the defense’s objections to the use of illegal secret testimony against Manning. Question: If Manning isn’t allowed to violate the law, why is Lind?" Disabled man plans to sue after being tased by officer on bus

"Hulett suffered neurological damage in 1991 after being hit by two trains, causing him to be handicapped. 'Because my back feels better standing up that sitting down...puts more pressure on two herniated disks,' Hulett said. When the driver asked him to sit down, he refused. Syracuse Police were called and officers ordered Hulett to get off of the bus. He again refused, saying he was doing nothing wrong. After approximately a minute of back-and-forth with police, the incident escalated and police deployed a taser. In the video, an officer appears to lift up Hulett’s shirt and then fires the taser. "New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday said he would appeal a federal judge’s ruling that the police department’s 'stop and frisk' crime-fighting tactics violate constitutional rights. Bloomberg remained firm in his argument that the practice drove down the city’s crime rate, saying, 'The possibility of being stopped acts as a vital deterrent.' Tennessee judge changes baby’s name after ruling it a conflict with her beliefs

"A baby named 'Messiah' must be renamed, according to a judge in Tennessee, because Messiah is a ‘earned’ title in the Judeo-Christian tradition. The mother, Jaleesa Martin of Newport, Tenn., is appealing the decision handed down by Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew, who renamed the 7-month-old child 'Martin DeShawn McCullough,' after the parents came to her in a dispute over the child’s last name, according to the Tennesseean. The new name includes both parent’s last names but leaves out Messiah, 'which is a title and it’s a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ,' Ballew said." Judge blocks BART union’s proposed strike in San Francisco through October

"A judge on Sunday blocked a threatened San Francisco-area rail worker strike that could have disabled a critical part of the region’s transportation system serving 400,000 daily passengers. The BART rail system was shut down for 4-1/2 days in July when union workers walked off the job, creating severe roadway congestion and forcing commuters to miss work or crowd onto a limited number of other public transportation options. BART management says the average employee gets an annual salary of $79,500 plus $50,800 in benefits, and it is concerned the cost of benefits will continue to climb after increasing by nearly 200 percent in 10 years."
