PBS News Hour Highlights “Defend the Guard” Initiative

Some state legislators have been introducing bills to ban their state from deploying National Guard units for undeclared foreign wars. To date, Defend the Guard bills have been introduced in some 30 states. PBS News Hour Special Correspondent Mike Cerre reported on this movement in July and spoke with Dan McKnight who is helping drive the initiative.

Jefferson’s Favorite Book on Government?

The Declaration of Independence was not an effort to “find out new principles,” according to Thomas Jefferson. Instead, it was intended as “an expression of the American mind,” which was based on the principles of the greats like Locke, Cicero - and a guy named Algernon Sidney - whose book was owned by Jefferson, Madison, Adams, Franklin and many others.

Destroying the States: Antifederalist Brutus No. 6

Continuing his theme of warning against consolidation, or centralization of power, Brutus looks at the taxing power and general welfare, warning that politicians would use ambiguities to expand central power and eventually “swallow up the state governments.” He also takes Alexander Hamilton (in Federalist 23) to task.
