What Cop T-Shirts Tell Us About Police Culture

"The Village Voice reports that the quote was also printed on t-shirts worn by NYPD's infamous Street Crimes Unit, which was disbanded after shooting unarmed immigrant Amadou Diallo 41 times in 1999 as Diallo reached for his wallet. The Voice also reports that at least two NYPD police commissioners have used the phrase 'hunter of men' to describe police work -- Bernard Kerik and Howard Safir. There have been a number of other incidents over the years in which cops have donned t-shirts that reflect a mentality someone less lofty than 'protect and serve.'" Continue reading

Tens of thousands of government workers hired to roll out Obamacare

"State offices that will run insurance exchanges are hiring tens of thousands, either on staff or through outsourcing firms. Federal agencies that are key to implementing the law, such as the Internal Revenue Service, plan to hire thousands more, and private non-profit groups backed by the White House are dispatching thousands of newly hired staffers and volunteers into the field. HHS spent $394 million through last March on contracts to set up state insurance exchanges it will run, according to a GAO report this week. Experts say at least 2.7 million younger, healthier people need to sign up to make the exchanges work financially." Continue reading

“Stalin Would Love This…”

"There are dark, unspoken consequences of lists and information gathering. We’ve seen this before. While President Obama dismissed concerns about his administration’s domestic spying operations as 'minor intrusions' on our liberties, the truth is quite different if one actually takes the time to think about the potential implications of such massive data gathering. And can we really be accused of overreacting with the IRS abuse of targeted groups and the government leaks of late? No one but the self-deluded thinks that our data is unfailingly safe and in the hands of the most competent and trustworthy among us." Continue reading

NYPD ‘Hunting Of Man’ T-Shirts Seen On On-Duty Officers In Queens

"On-duty members of the NYPD's Queens Warrant Squad were spotted outside a city courthouse last week wearing T-shirts imprinted with a Ernest Hemingway quote, that in the context of the officers' work, could be considered very disturbing: 'There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.' Tipsters, who passed along the photo below, told Gothamist and SocialistWorker.orgthat the cops had badges around their necks, and that words on the front of their T-shirts read, 'Fugitive Enforcement NYPD.'" Federal Auditors, IRS Pan Tax Regulations For Bitcoins

"Federal auditors are recommending that the IRS not issue regulations for taxpayers on filing returns for the money earned through the exchange of virtual currencies. The tax agency has neither the money nor the time to craft compliance rules for the emerging market, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office. GAO officials acknowledged the government might be missing out on tax revenue as a result of not publishing Bitcoin-specific rules, but it is unclear how much. 'Given the uncertain extent of noncompliance with virtual currency transactions, formal guidance, such as regulations, may not be warranted,' the auditors concluded." Continue reading

Can Swiss Human Rights Withstand IRS Extraterritorial Tax Enforcement?

"Switzerland is being persecuted for being a productive, peaceful nation that has a strong human rights policy with regards to privacy. More specifically, politicians from high-tax nations resent the fact that investors flock to Switzerland to benefit from good policies, and they are pressuring the Swiss government to weaken that nation’s human rights laws so that governments with bad fiscal systems have an easier time of tracking and taxing flight capital. But I’m not opening champagne just yet. The Swiss have resisted American demands before, and on more than one occasion, only to eventually back down." Continue reading

FATCA Reciprocity Will Now Target Delaware?

"Leaders of the G8 major economies have agreed new measures to clamp down on money launderers, illegal tax evaders and corporate tax avoiders. They include requiring that shell companies – often used to exploit tax loopholes and invest money anonymously – identify their effective owners. Governments also agreed to give each other automatic access to information on their residents’ tax affairs." Continue reading

Responding to Scandals and Corruption, the IRS Rewards Itself with Giant Bonuses

"What do you do if you’re part of a government bureaucracy that has been caught red-handed engaged in sleazy, corrupt, and (almost surely) illegal targeting of Americans for their political beliefs? But before you answer, keep in mind that your bureaucracy also has been exposed for wasting huge amounts of money at lavish conferences. What’s the ideal way of dealing with the fallout from that scandal as well? The answer is simple. Even though you and your pals already are paid more than the peasants in the private sector, give yourself and your cronies giant bonuses!" Continue reading
