"The former Sheriff of Graham County, Arizona rose to fame when he sued the Clinton Administration over the Brady Act, requiring sheriffs departments to issue background checks on anyone looking to purchase a handgun. 'It said the sheriff will work for us whether he likes it or not, and do so at his own expense and if he doesn't do it, we can arrest him for failure to comply. That's how stupid Congress in our country has gotten,' said Mack. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, where the act was ruled unconstitutional. Deputies punished for actions during 1:30 am wrong-address arrest

"Deputies went to a house in Ellenwood on July 26 to serve an arrest warrant. The family told CBS Atlanta News they were startled at 1:30 a.m. when deputies beat on their front door. Fearing for their safety, the family said they took their time to open the door. Once inside, an officer used excessive force and aggressive language, according to one family member. 'If the police come to your house and need to come in, whether you agree or not that they need to come into the home, you need to open the door,' said DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown." "What I've been told is that someone on the APL [Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Laboratory—motto: 'Enhancing national security through science and technology'] side of JHU discovered my blog post and determined that it was hosting/linking to classified documents. This requires a human since I don't believe there's any automated scanner for this process. It's not clear to me whether this request originated at APL or if it came from elsewhere. All I know is that I received an e-mail this morning from the Interim Dean of the Engineering school asking me to take down the post and to desist from using the NSA logo. S&P calls US lawsuit retaliation for stripping AAA rating

"Standard & Poor's on Tuesday blasted a $5 billion fraud lawsuit by the U.S. government as retaliation for its 2011 decision to strip the country of its AAA credit rating. The McGraw Hill Financial unit was the only major credit rating agency to take away the United States' top rating and the only one sued by the Department of Justice for allegedly misleading banks and credit unions about the credibility of its ratings before the 2008 financial crisis. In a filing with the U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, Calif., S&P said the lawsuit attempts to punish it for exercising its First Amendment free speech rights under the U.S. Constitution but also seeks 'excessive fines' in violation of the Eighth Amendment." Libertarian state senate candidate gets arrested at pro-marijuana rally

"A Libertarian candidate for the New Jersey Senate got himself arrested at a pro-marijuana rally in Philadelphia over the weekend. Don DeZarn, 46, was arrested for the second time in four months for marijuana possession on Saturday at the monthly SmokeDown Prohibition demonstration. After encouraging the participants of the rally to visit their representatives, DeZarn lit up and smoked a marijuana joint as police stood nearby. "Help us ask the Supreme Court to review a terrible decision made by the 9th Circuit Court. Here's what happened: Border guards seized an American citizen's computer when he re-crossed the border from Mexico. They did this because the man had an old criminal record, NOT because there was evidence of a new crime. This was clearly an illegal search without a warrant. He was arrested and convicted on the basis of forensically-uncovered, deleted files. Nevertheless, the 9th Circuit upheld this seizure as a legal search.
