Paris suburbs erupt in violent protests over veil ban

"The violence kicked off Friday evening, when some 400 people protested near the Trappes police station, southwest of Paris. They set fire to bins, destroyed bus stops and hurled stones at police who responded with tear gas. A 14-year-old boy suffered a serious eye injury and several police officers were also hurt. The veil ban, introduced in 2011, has outraged many in France’s Muslim community, which at an estimated four million is western Europe’s largest Muslim minority. Officials say more than 700 women have been stopped since the ban was introduced. The growing visibility of French Muslims has also sparked a backlash from nationalists." Continue reading →

Solving the Detroit Crisis

"Conservatives will, of course, be proven correct that Detroit will be only the first major city to seek a bail-out, but their objections will be fruitless. In fact, it is not only possible, but likely, that, once the concept of 'No City Left Behind' transforms public perception of a Detroit from municipal redundancy to humanitarian necessity, the door may be further opened, not only to other major cities, but to entire states. The Case for Abolishing the Department of Homeland Security

"On Friday, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano resigned to take up a post running California’s university system. With her departure, there are now 15 vacant positions at the top of the department. That suggests it would be a particularly humane moment to shut the whole thing down. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was a panicked reaction to the Sept. 11 attacks. It owes its continued existence to a vastly exaggerated assessment of the threat of terrorism. The department is also responsible for some of the least cost-effective spending in the U.S. government. It’s time to admit that creating it was a mistake." Continue reading →

"The social credit crackpottery of the 1930s has returned, wrapped in the robes of Neo-Nazi statism. Those boosting it wrap their rhetoric in anti-banker sentiments, but make no mistake: A meme of this magnitude is a Tavistock-like promotion. These people use the rhetoric of libertarianism to arrive at terrifyingly statist conclusions. The state wiped out some 150 million people in the 20th century, and we would actually think it's a lot more. To avoid stalling the talks, separate US-EU discussions on the NSA activities were held quietly this week at the Department of Justice.
