Most Americans fear anti-aging technology is luxury for the rich

"Most Americans do not want to live beyond age 100, and a poll out Tuesday suggests many worry that anti-aging technologies may end up being a luxury for the rich. A majority of US adults (56 percent) said they would not 'choose to undergo medical treatments to slow the aging process and live to be 120 or more,' said the Pew report. The median, or midpoint, for ideal lifespan was 90, or about 11 years longer than the current US average. Asked whether current medical treatments are worth the costs, 54 percent agreed and 41 percent disagreed on grounds that modern medical advances 'often create as many problems as they solve.'" "Continuing the long tradition of deference to the national-security state by the U.S. federal judiciary, a federal judge recently dismissed a lawsuit by the sons of a man named Frank Olson seeking damages for the CIA’s murder of their father. The excuses that the judge used to dismiss the case were the statute of limitations and a previous settlement that had been entered into regarding the case. "Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and a group of 86 other signatories from Congress sent a letter on Thursday to call for an end to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s ban on blood donors who are 'men who have had sex with other men (MSM), at any time since 1977,' a policy the FDA has had in place since the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in 1992. The American Medical Association, widely regarded as the most mainstream medical organization in the country, recently joined the chorus of those who oppose the FDA’s ban on gay and bisexual blood donors." Lawyers: Illegal body cavity searches of women standard policy at Texas traffic stops

"A lawyer representing women who faced 'unconstitutional' cavity searches of their genitals at traffic stops in Texas last year have said that the practice is essentially standard practice in many jurisdictions. In two separate cases last year, four women said that they were humiliated with illegal cavity searches on the side of Texas highways. Angel Dobbs, 38, and her 24-year-old niece, Ashley Dobbs were searched after a trooper saw them throw a cigarette butt out the car window. And Brandy Hamilton, 27, and Alexandria Randle, 26, were searched after a trooper claimed he smelled marijuana." Continue reading →

Georgia Insurance Rates Spike Under Obamacare

"Health insurance rates in Georgia are rising by up to 198 percent under Obamacare, the Georgia Insurance Commissioner said in a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Monday. 'Georgia consumers cannot afford these massive rate increases,' Hudgens wrote to Sebelius. For an average 25 year-old male, premiums are set to rise 85 to 198 percent within the exchanges, while for a 45 year-old male, premiums will rise 40 to 100 percent, Florence said. Aetna withdraws from Maryland Obamacare exchange after state demands lower rates

"Aetna Inc pulled out of Maryland’s health insurance exchange being created under President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law after the state pressed it to lower its proposed rates by up to 29 percent. Each U.S. state will have an online exchange where Americans will be able to buy insurance plans, starting on October 1. The government is counting on about 7 million people to enroll next year for this insurance, many of whom will qualify for subsidies. According to online documents, Aetna had requested an average monthly premium of $394 a month for one of its plans and the agency had approved an average rate of $281 per month." Continue reading →

"Under the law, popularly referred to as Obamacare, lawmakers and their aides were required to source health insurance 'created' by the law or offered through one of its exchanges; and without the subsidies they currently have, the members of Congress would have faced thousands of dollars in additional premium payments each year, the reports said. However, the Office of Personnel Management now plans to rule that the government can continue to make a contribution to the health-care premiums of the lawmakers and their staff, according to unnamed congressional sources and a White House official." We Are Becoming a Nation of Burger Flippers

"The American workforce is slowly converting to a force of burger flippers and shelf stockers, mostly older people in semi-retirement. The implications for the economy are serious, and the ballooning cost of health care for businesses under Obamacare bears much of the responsibility: The law’s (expensive) mandate that employees who work over 30 hours per week receive mandatory health benefits is suppressing the hiring of full-time workers, particularly by small businesses.
