Furor Growing Against Obama Over ‘Monsanto Protection Act’

"The protests come on the heels of a massive petition campaign organized by the advocacy group Food Democracy Now, which gathered the signatures of more than 200,000 people who wanted Obama to veto HR 933 in order to stop Section 735 -- the so-called 'Monsanto Protection Act' -- from being codified into law. But Obama ignored it, instead choosing to sign a bill that effectively bars federal courts from being able to halt the sale or planting of GMO or GE crops and seeds, no matter what health consequences from the consumption of these products may come to light in the future." Business lobby moves to criminalize filming animal abuse on factory farms

"Bills being shopped in six states by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) would make it a crime to film animal abuse at factory farms or lie on job applications, in hopes of shutting down animal rights activists who infiltrate slaughterhouses to expose ghastly conditions. The proposals mandate that evidence of animal abuse be turned over to law enforcement within 48 hours, or face a financial penalty. Several of the bills also make it a crime to lie on slaughterhouse job applications, which activists commonly do in order to get footage like the content of a video published by the HSUS, embedded below." Scientist calls for caffeine to be a regulated substance

"Jack E. James argued in an editorial published Monday that researchers and lawmakers alike need to take a look at caffeine-related deaths and near-deaths. 'Armed with improved knowledge of caffeine toxicity and faced with extensive evidence of substantial harm to public health, today’s authorities appear more perplexed and less decisive than their counterparts of more than a century earlier,' James continued. 'In light of current international befuddlement and inaction, legislators, policy makers, and regulators of today confront a stark question — how many caffeine-related fatalities and near-misses must there be before we regulate?'" Ron Paul: When they came for the Raw Milk drinkers…

"All Americans, even if they do not believe it is a wise choice to drink raw milk or use gold coins, should be concerned about the use of force to limit our choices. This is because there is no limiting principle to the idea that the government force is justified if used 'for our own good.' Today it is those who sell raw milk who are being victimized by government force; tomorrow it could be those who sell soda pop or Styrofoam cups. Therefore, all Americans should speak out against these injustices." Continue reading
