Police tell victims: Call 911 and you’ll get evicted under ‘nuisance’ laws

"In Pennsylvania and other states, police can force landlords to evict tenants who officers consider to be a nuisance. According to the New York Times, under so-called 'nuisance property' laws, individuals like domestic violence victim Lakisha Briggs of Norristown, PA can be told by police that if they call 911 one more time, they’ll be forced out of their homes. The nuisance ordinances are intended to protect residential neighborhoods from rowdy, disruptive households, but in cases like Briggs’, they can leave victims of violence in an impossible situation, needing to call for help, but knowing it could cost them their home." Texas deputy sues woman for ‘mental anguish’ after he kills her son-in-law

"Corina Padilla, who witnessed the incident, said that her brother-in-law never touched the officers and was backing away with his hands up when they shot him. 'At no moment did Kemal assault the officer,' she insisted. 'An unarmed man, a family guy, father and husband of three girls was killed. He had no criminal record. He was self-employed in import-export of very expensive rugs from Turkey and Persia.' Padilla said that Yazar was suffering from stress and had consumed some tea that caused him to hallucinate. She lashed out at Pullen for the 'outrageous' lawsuit. Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia agreed that the suit was 'unprecedented.'" Continue reading

Justice Department sues to block US Airways-American merger

"In a surprise move Tuesday, the U.S. Justice Department sued to block the $11 billion merger of American Airlines and US Airways, which would create the world's largest airline. The Justice Department said it would harm competition and U.S. consumers, as just four airlines would control more than 80 percent of the U.S. commercial air travel market. The department took action against this merger, yet recently let go other combinations between major airlines. Industry experts said the move was out of step with past practices and would potentially leave US Air and American, which is emerging from bankruptcy, at a competitive disadvantage." “They Kidnapped Our Child”: Why CPS Needs Transparency Now

"In April 2013, police officers and a social worker from Sacramento County's Child Protective Services entered the home of Anna and Alex Nikolayev and took their baby, Sammy, away from them. They had no warrant. 'What they'd done was, basically, kidnapped our child with the help of police,' says Alex Nikolayev. The young, first-time parents were not notified of where Sammy was being taken and wouldn't find out for a full 24 hours. The dispute stemmed from the parents' desire to obtain a second medical opinion before subjecting Sammy to major heart surgery." Continue reading

Illinois illegally seizes bees resistant to Roundup; kills remaining queens [2012]

"The Illinois Ag Dept. illegally seized privately owned bees from renowned naturalist, Terrence Ingram, without providing him with a search warrant and before the court hearing on the matter. Behind the obvious violations of his Constitutional rights is Monsanto. Ingram was researching Roundup’s effects on bees, which he’s raised for 58 years. 'They ruined 15 years of my research,' he told Prairie Advocate, by stealing most of his stock. Of note, Illinois beekeepers are going underground after Ingram’s experience and refuse to register their hives, in case the state tries to steal their private property on phony claims." NPR: Lawmakers, Banking Regulators Take On Bitcoin

"CORNISH: How significant is New York's move to launch an investigation, to issue these subpoenas? BRITO: So it's interesting, people hear the word subpoena and they think something bad, right? But all the word subpoena means is that it is a request for information, right? And you're compelled to, you know, produce, you know, you're asked questions and you have to answer them. And I think that's very good. [..] So when I see New York issuing these subpoenas, being very transparent about the fact that they're going to be looking at this and asking for input, you know, I think that's very good." How to Use Public Health to Control Everything

"The early focus on a holistic public led to the movement of 'racial hygiene' which appeared in 19th century Germany. A historian of public health, Dorothy Porter, explains that the movement considered 'the health, not only of individuals, but of the race as a whole.' The trend was also called 'social hygiene,' and spread to other countries. It reached its zenith under the Nazis. In his fascinating book, The Nazi War on Cancer, Robert Proctor mentions some Nazi slogans: 'You have the duty to be healthy,' 'Food is not a private matter,' 'Your body belongs to the nation.'"
