Nancy Pelosi sends fifth letter on Syria

"Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a fifth letter to Democratic colleagues in a week in an attempt to bolster support for a measure to authorize a U.S. strike in Syria. In the letter sent Saturday, Pelosi (D-Calif.) highlighted statements supporting the strike by President Barack Obama and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.). In earlier letters, Pelosi emphasized the importance of the strike and has told members she will be flexible about the eventual language in a use-of-force authorization. Pelosi also drew attention to Obama’s remarks that he had not set a red line in Syria, but that Congress set one in the 2003 Syria Accountability Act." Continue reading

Al Franken Leaning Toward Supporting Syria Resolution

"Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.) on Friday said he was leaning toward supporting a resolution authorizing military action in Syria, giving a lift to Obama administration efforts to build support for a strike that U.S. President Barack Obama has sought in spite of widespread unpopularity. 'To me, there is enough evidence that there has been a chemical weapons attack; that it was authorized by the regime and I believe that we have to demonstrate that you can’t do that, so I’m leaning that direction,' Mr. Franken told reporters Friday after a closed-door briefing for lawmakers." President Obama Calls for Conscience Vote On Syria, Even If Public Opposed

"'It's conceivable that, at the end of the day, I don't persuade a majority of the American people that it's the right thing to do,' Obama said in response to a question from ABC News during a solo press conference at the conclusion of the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. But, Obama said, members of Congress need to consider the lessons of World War II and their own consciences and vote 'yes' to authorize the use of force, even if it means going against the opinion of the majority of their constituents. 'Each member of Congress is going to have to decide if [they] think it's the right thing to do for America's national security and the world's national security,' Obama said." Continue reading

14 Principled Anti-War Celebrities We Fear May Have Been Kidnapped

"Our government is yet again marching us towards a war of choice in the Middle East and our non-partisan, peace-loving celebrities have gone missing since late 2008. We fear the worst. The only explanation for their continued silence must be a large, organized kidnapping. To whoever is responsible for their disappearance, please post pictures of them holding a recent newspaper so we know they’re okay." Continue reading

Bill Bonner: A Personal Appeal to Barack Obama

"We don’t share the common fantasy of central bankers: that they can know better than the market what interest rate, employment rate and inflation rate the country should have. We mention the three because the Fed sets short-term interest rates through its conventional monetary policy. And it tries to keep a lid on long-term Treasury yields through its 'unconventional' QE programs. And it does so, it claims, to adjust two other important rates: employment and inflation. Every candidate for the top post at the Fed – except us – believes it is his right and duty to do these things. Which means none should be allowed anywhere near the Fed." Continue reading

9 Myths About Obama’s Drone Killings Debunked

"The Obama administration has launched more drone strikes in recent weeks than any time since 2009, according to human rights lawyers and overseas media reports. Attacks in Yemen killed more than 37 people, Reuters reported. Nearly all of their identities remain unknown. The killings are a bleak reminder that Syria is not the only war President Obama is pushing. Despite the president's recent pledges to make the drone program more transparent to the public, it remains not only secretive and unaccountable, but also at odds with U.S. and international law." Justin Raimondo: The Lies Behind This War

"This government lies about everything – James 'least untruthful' Clapper is the poster boy for the distinct style this gang has brought to the White House. Kerry is fast catching up to him, however, as the whoppers come thick and fast. These folks are no different from their neocon predecessors – except that the neocons were better liars. The lies they told were bigger, more imaginative, and far more elaborate, although the Obamaites are doing some pretty quick catching up. Perhaps the administration ought to call in veterans of the Bush regime’s old Office of Special Plans for some pointers. I hear Doug Feith is looking for a new gig." Continue reading
