A Real and Lasting Peace

"Seems as if supplying Syrian rebels with arms just isn’t enough. The US government and its Western allies are about to unleash direct military force in the small Middle Eastern country. We have heard the drumbeat of war for a long time – now as early as Thursday bombs may start falling on Syria. Instead of regime change, we are told, US military forces just seek to 'send a strong message' to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad to stop (apparently) using chemical weapons. A humble, non-interventionist, foreign policy is no good — to be humanitarian we must bomb other populations." Continue reading

How New Zealand banned software patents without violating international law

"What do you do when you’re a small country with a technology industry convinced that innovation requires the banning of software patents, but you’ve signed an international treaty that in theory obliges you to make software patentable? If you’re New Zealand, you simply declare that software isn’t an invention in the first place. In 1998, the head of the UK Patent Office commented that European law says that a piece of pure software is not technically an invention. In New Zealand, a poll of the members of the Institute of IT Professionals revealed that 94% were in favor of banning software patents. In India, courts have upheld that country’s ban on software patents." Continue reading

Western logic on Syria: ‘We need to bomb it to save it’

"The narrative that the Assad government used chemical weapons, specifically while a UN team was in Damascus to investigate previous uses of chemical weapons, is tactically and politically illogical and in no way serves the interests of the Syrian government. Above all, the use of chemical weapons benefits the arms industry, as four US warships with ballistic missiles are moving into position in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, ready to shower Damascus with Tomahawk cruise missiles – all under the auspices of protecting civilians. There are numerous revelations that would suggest that anti-government militias have access to these weapons and are in fact guilty of using them." Continue reading

Justifying the Unjustifiable: US Uses Past Crimes to Legalize Future Ones

"The US/NATO war against Yugoslavia, which used unilateral force to break up a sovereign state, detaching the historic Serbian province of Kosovo and transforming it into a US satellite, was clearly in violation of international law. During the past decade, the Western powers have invented and promoted a theoretical 'right to protect' (R2P) in an effort to get around the UN Charter in order to clear the way for wars whose final purpose is regime change. The use of R2P to overthrow Gaddafi in Libya gave the game away, ensuring Russian and Chinese opposition for any further such manoeuvre in the UN Security Council." Continue reading

United States and allies build case for military action in Syria

"The ground for a military intervention was set out by US Vice President Joe Biden, who for the first time said last week’s attack, thought to have killed hundreds, could only have been perpetrated by President Bashar al-Assad’s forces. Britain joined the US in saying regime forces were behind the strikes, and Prime Minister David Cameron said London and its allies had to consider whether targeted military action was required to 'deter and degrade the future use of chemical weapons'. Senior officials in Washington told NBC news that possible strikes against targets in Syria could take place as early as Thursday." Continue reading

Britain to submit UN resolution on Syria

"Britain will submit a draft resolution to the UN Security Council condemning suspected chemical attacks in Syria and demanding 'all necessary measures' to protect civilians. The announcement came as the US and its allies pressed their case for likely military action against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Prime Minister David Cameron said Britain would present a resolution 'condemning the chemical weapons attack by Assad' to a meeting of the Security Council’s five permanent members in New York on Wednesday. The developments came after US Vice President Joe Biden said the chemical attacks could only have been perpetrated by Assad’s forces." Continue reading

Lieberman, Rove, Kristol Urge Obama to Attack Syria

"In an open letter to President Obama a group of warmongers have urged President Obama to impose 'meaningful consequences on the Assad regime.' 'At a minimum, the United States, along with willing allies and partners, should use standoff weapons and airpower to target the Syrian dictatorship’s military units that were involved in the recent large-scale use of chemical weapons. It should also provide vetted moderate elements of Syria’s armed opposition with the military support required to identify and strike regime units armed with chemical weapons,' says the letter." The Game Changer: Syria Will Strike Israel Should U.S. Attack

"Folks, this has all the makings of the start of a World War. One misstep here and this could very quickly spread throughout the middle east and beyond – a warning that Russia gave the U.S. just a few months ago. There is, according to the Russians, no proof that Syria’s government launched a chemical attack on its own people. There doesn’t need to be. Armies are mobilizing, just as they did following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June of 1914. By December of 1914 over a million people were dead and war lines spanning hundreds of miles were drawn across Europe. It can happen fast. And this time it just might." Continue reading

WikiLeaks Party statement on intervention in Syria

"Syria is in the grip of a terrible proxy war with many powerful interests involved: The Syrian government; the Muslim Brotherhood; other Sunni Islamic militant organisations; the United States; the United Kingdom; France; Lebanon; Hezbollah; Israel; Qatar; Saudi Arabia; Iran, and Russia–which has one of its few remaining naval bases in Syria. All of these interests are drawing on various assets to bolster their positions and this includes the United States drawing on Australia. Some seek to topple the Syrian government and replace it with one more amenable to their interests, while others seek to maintain the status quo." Continue reading

“Are You Willing to Die So That the CIA . . .

". . . can impose a puppet government in Syria maybe, fifty or sixty years from now, while absurdly calling it 'democracy'? This is the question that should be asked to every new U.S. military recruit now that the neocons have their new war in Syria. As the neocons’ Dr. Strangelove, Charles Krauthammer, pointed out in his latest column, the CIA DID impose puppet-dictators in South Korea, Taiwan, Phillipines, Chile, Brazil, Spain, and Portugal (I would add Iran), and then fifty years or so later the CIA declared 'victory' by calling the latest edition of those puppet regimes 'democracy.'"
