Medical Marijuana Patient Jerry Duval’s Prison Term Could Cost Taxpayers More Than $1.2 Million

"American taxpayers could spend upwards of $1.2 million over the next decade imprisoning Jerry Duval, a Michigan medical marijuana patient who was convicted of distributing the drug. Duval has a kidney and pancreas transplant, as well as glaucoma and neuropathy. His family grew marijuana on his Michigan farm in part to treat his ailments. But when the Department of Justice prosecuted him in federal court, Duval was barred from presenting evidence of his compliance with Michigan's medical marijuana law. He will report to prison on June 11." Continue reading

Miami-Dade Police Choke Black Teenager Because He Was Giving Them “Dehumanizing Stares”

"Fourteen-year-old Tremaine McMillian didn't threaten police. He didn't attack them. He wasn't armed. All the black teenager did was appear threatening by shooting Miami-Dade police officers a few 'dehumanizing stares,' and that was apparently enough for the officers to decide to slam him against the ground and put him in a chokehold. McMillian says he was carrying a six-week old puppy at the time and couldn't have been clenching his fists because he was feeding the dog with a bottle. He claims that during the confrontation the dog's front left paw was injured. The teen was charged with a felony count of resisting arrest with violence and disorderly conduct." Continue reading

Woman Handing Out Samples at Va. Costco Shot Dead by Police

"A Sterling, Va., Costco has resumed normal business hours Thursday, less than a day after sheriff's deputies fatally shot a woman who came at officers with scissors and a knife. The melee began at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, when store employees noticed the woman acting oddly while handing out pizza samples, said Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman. Deputies were called to the store to handle the disturbance. One officer tried to use a stun gun on Scott, but Chapman said the stun gun 'did not work,' and one of the deputies fatally shot her. A sheriff's deputy also was wounded in the leg, possibly by a ricochet. The only shots fired were by one of the deputies." Continue reading

Police Shoot & Kill Grandfather While Responding To False Burglar Alarm

"A 72-year-old Woodhaven resident fatally shot by police officers investigating a burglary call was pronounced dead inside his garage, the Tarrant County medical examiner said Wednesday. Police have said that two patrol officers encountered an armed Jerry Waller at the back of his house 'near the garage-driveway area.' They have not specifically said where Waller was when he was shot. But Waller’s son, Chris Waller, said in an email to the Star-Telegram that the police account of the shooting is inaccurate. 'My father never stepped outside of his garage. He was shot multiple times in the chest only a few steps away from the doorway to his kitchen,' Chris Waller said." Continue reading

Texas Police Tase Overweight Asthmatic to Death in Drug Raid That Uncovers No Drugs

"On May 16th, Forth Worth police entered the home of Jarmaine Darden, 34, in search of cocaine. The raid, which does not appear to have uncovered any cocaine, ended with the 34-year-old father dead after police tased him multiple times. Family members told CBS 11 that the 350-pound man, who'd been asleep on the couch when police came in, couldn't drop to the ground on his stomach as officers commanded because he suffered from asthma. According to what witnesses told CBS 11, Darden stopped breathing and died after police tased him the second time. An investigation into the incident is underway." Continue reading

When the Vicious Sit in Judgment

"llinois resident Michael Cook has been charged with drug and firearms offenses in East St. Louis following the death of a colleague from a cocaine overdose. Cook and his friend, Joe Christ, were staying at a hunting lodge last March 10 when Christ was found dead. Cook was accused of using heroin while in possession of firearms. There are two unusual – and, most likely, related – aspects of this case. The first is that Cook and Christ were sitting Circuit Court Judges. The second is that Cook, despite being accused of firearms-related felonies, was released on his own recognizance – most likely as a matter of 'professional courtesy' from another judge." Police Chief as Judge, Jury, and Executioner

"In reacting to the murder of Jason Ellis, Bardstown Police Chief Rick McCubbin spoke of revenge, rather than justice: 'I can assure you we won’t give up on this person or persons until we either have them in custody or in the front sight of one of our weapons. I certainly hope the latter is the case.' Dominic Aguilar of Roseville, California, whose friend Ernesto Duenez, Jr. was gunned down in his front yard by a police officer named John Moody, was arrested and charged with a felony for a Facebook post expressing the hope that Moody would meet a violent end. Why was one considered a crime, but not the other?" Continue reading

Seattle police pay $20,000 for cover-up involving violence against protesters

"The Seattle Police Department (SPD) paid the Seattle Times $20,000 after admitting to withholding an internal memo criticizing the department’s response against protesters in a May 1, 2012 demonstration. The Times reported on Tuesday that the department confessed to violating the state’s Public Records Act by not making the memo public, which criticized Assistant Chief Mike Sanford for 'contradictory orders, haphazard planning and operational interference' during the 2012 'May Day” demonstration in downtown Seattle. The payout prevents the department from being sued by the Times for violating the law." Continue reading
