NYPD lied under oath to prosecute Occupy activist

"An Occupy Wall Street activist was acquitted Thursday after jurors were presented with video evidence that directly contradicted the NYPD’s story. Prosecutors working on behalf of the NYPD have insisted that Premo tackled an NYPD officer and broke a bone during a protest. This week, Premo’s attorney presented a video that showed officers charging into the defendant unprovoked. The video shows a NYPD officer was filming the arrest as well, but prosecutors told Premo’s attorney that no such footage existed. The Manhattan District Attorney's office had presented Premo with a deal that would have let him off the hook by pleading guilty to lesser charges." Continue reading

My life as a tyrant

"I became a police officer because I wanted to be a good guy. Even though we’ve all seen reports of police brutality and corruption, I still believe we cops are the good guys. I’ve seen cops perform brave, selfless acts for strangers on countless occasions. Even the worst cops I’ve ever known would risk their lives to defend the innocent. But I have to say this anyway. Before you start throwing shoes, hear me out. I have a good reason for saying it. If you think our police are no threat to your freedom, you’re living in a fantasy world." Continue reading

U.S. Government Wins Appeal in Kim Dotcom Extradition Battle

"In New Zealand, data-content entrepreneur Kim Dotcom is under attack for copyright violations. In the US, Pfc. Bradley Manning faces 20 years in prison for confessing that he sent archives of military and diplomatic files to WikiLeaks, which subsequently released the information to the world. Now it seems Dotcom is losing his battle and may end up being extradited to the US and Manning may end up with close to a lifetime in prison. But on a deeper level, the suffering of these two individuals (warranted or not) will not diminish the changes being ushered in by the Internet." Continue reading

Our Laws Make those of Medieval England Seem Reasonable

"40-year-old Orlando, Florida resident Anthony Brasfield was with his girlfriend in the parking lot of a motel when he released a handful of helium-filled, heart-shaped balloons into the air. A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper saw this and arrested Brasfield for violating the Florida Air and Water Pollution Control Act –a third-degree felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years. On February 23, Lendsey and Delilha Harbin, a married couple from Portage, Indiana, paid for a ticket to see the new action film 'Snitch' and then, after it ended, decided to switch theaters and catch the zombie movie 'Warm Bodies.' They were charged with felony theft." Continue reading

Ed Flynn: Milwaukee Crime Lord, Citizen Disarmament Advocate

"Every city police department is an armed gang organized to implement the will of the municipal corporation that employs them. Under the rule of Ed Flynn the Milwaukee PD has become one of the most malodorous outfits of its kind in the Midwestern United States. Flynn clearly sees himself as commanding an army of occupation. In practical terms, he is less a warlord than a crime lord who presides over an officially sanctioned street gang. Like most petty dictators of his ilk, Flynn is protected by a praetorian guard that will retaliate against people who speak ill of their dear leader." Continue reading

Philly Judge Who Found Cop Not Guilty, Married to Cop

"The video showing Philadelphia Police Lt. Jonathan Josey punching a woman was overwhelming enough for his department to quickly fire him last year. But it wasn’t enough for a judge to find him guilty of simple assault this week. Now we’re learning that Municipal Judge Patrick Dugan is married to a longtime Philadelphia police officer who just happened to be one of about 100 officers in court showing their support for Josey during his non-jury trial earlier this month." Connecticut Towns Pay Out Big for Deadly SWAT Drug Raid

"Five Connecticut towns whose SWAT team killed an unarmed man during a 2008 drug raid have agreed to pay $3.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the man's family. Another lawsuit, filed by the man who owned the home that was raided, is pending. Police videos showed them throwing a flash-bang grenade through a window, smashing down the back door, and yelling out, 'Police, warrant!' When it was over, Guizan lay dead on the floor with six gunshot wounds and Terebisi, who had been pinned by one of the officers, was handcuffed and dragged out of the house. Sweeney received the Monroe Police Officer of the Year award for his part in the raid." Continue reading

One fake MIT shooter and the troubling trend of SWATting

"When all was said and done, the area remained shut down for nearly three hours. More than 30 armed officers searched the campus. Traffic was diverted outside the area. Numerous news outlets followed the situation. MIT issued formal warnings to all members of its community (more than an hour after the initial CPD alert). Students were asked to take shelter in place throughout the morning. The MIT employee identified by the caller was put through questioning but eventually cleared of any involvement. Even the FBI and Secret Service were called in on the matter. Haven't heard about this? Thankfully, it's because no shooting took place on February 23 at MIT." Continue reading
