Jimmy Carter: U.S. Has ‘A Cruel and Unusual Record’

“Recent legislation has made legal the president’s right to detain a person indefinitely on suspicion of affiliation with terrorist organizations or ‘associated forces,’ a broad, vague power that can be abused without meaningful oversight from the courts or Congress. In addition to American citizens’ being targeted for assassination or indefinite detention, recent laws have canceled the restraints in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 to allow unprecedented violations of our rights to privacy through warrantless wiretapping and government mining of our electronic communications.” Continue reading

California police slammed with death threats after shooting Max the Rottweiler

"The social media fallout from the Sunday shooting has the Hawthorne Police Department scrambling to protect its officers and also tell another version of the story. Police released a new video of the shooting taken from a different angle. They believe this alternative perspective will prove to viewers that the officer’s actions were justified. Max the Rottweiler was shot four times on Sunday after lunging at officers who were handcuffing his owner, Leon Rosby. The original graphic cellphone recording of Max’s death went viral on YouTube, prompting a flood of threats against the officers and their families through telephone, email and Facebook." Police Commandeer Homes, Get Sued

"Henderson police arrested a family for refusing to let officers use their homes as lookouts for a domestic violence investigation of their neighbors, the family claims in court. The Mitchell family's claim includes Third Amendment violations, a rare claim in the United States. The Third Amendment prohibits quartering soldiers in citizens' homes in times of peace without the consent of the owner. Police took Anthony and Michael Mitchell to jail and booked them for obstructing an officer. They were jailed for at least nine hours before they bailed out, they say in the complaint." 4th of July DUI Checkpoint – Drug Dogs, Searched without Consent, Rights Taken Away, while Innocent

"The officer orders me to pull over and get out of my car, bullies me around, gets the drug sniffing K-9, lies about me having 'Illegal Drugs' in the car, searches without consent, and tells me that it is ok to take away my freedom. All while not being detained. All this harassment because my window was not lowered enough to his preference. I broke no laws whatsoever. All of this on a day that we are supposed to be celebrating freedom and liberty. At the end of the encounter, the officer did not want to give me his name when I asked him. After I repeatedly asked him, he finally gave it to me." Continue reading

Ex-Marine Arrested for Wearing Wrong T-Shirt at Supreme Court

"Police had probable cause to arrest a Marine Corps veteran in the Supreme Court building for wearing a jacket that said 'Occupy Everywhere,' a federal judge ruled. Deputy Chief Timothy Dolan approached him and told Scott that he could not wear the jacket in the building because it was comparable to a sign or demonstration. Dolan told Scott he must either take off the jacket or leave the building. When Scott refused to do either, Dolan instructed another officer to place Scott under arrest for unlawful entry. Scott was released the same day, and charges against him were later dropped." Continue reading

Belgian diplomat booted from NY golf club, treated like ‘terrorists’ over wife’s breast-feeding

"Minutes later, the Greenburgh Police Department arrived. Detective Scott Harding allegedly yelled, 'Close the doors!' and two other diners were told to leave the terrace. 'He was walking as if he was acting in a Western movie,' Neijens said. 'He had one hand on his gun, one hand on his Taser.' Neijens said the officer warned the couple they were trespassing and said some people at the club thought they were terrorists because of their black backpack. When Remans, on the verge of tears, questioned why terrorists would breast-feed at a ritzy club, the cop allegedly replied, 'In Sri Lanka, babies are used by terrorists.'" Continue reading

Hey, scofflaws! Police union cards available on eBay

"Buying a 'get out of jail free' card is just a mouse click away. Police union cards that cops hand out to friends and family free of charge are selling on eBay for as much as $100 a pop, even though the resale of the coveted plastic is strictly prohibited by the unions. The cards are often used to get out of minor jams like speeding tickets or parking violations — flashing one with your driver’s license is a way of suggesting you’re a member of law enforcement or at least related to someone who is. One eBay seller, 'anonymous1234567,' pointed out that some cards — like the 2013 LBA card he sold to The Post for $100 — work better than others." Continue reading

David Galland: How to Tell if You Live in a Police State

"It is always worth remembering that humans can adopt very warped attitudes, even to the point of falling in love with mad dogs… and mad rulers. But more to the actual point of mad dogs and all that, the mindset of all the various branches of what is currently lumped under the moniker 'Homeland Security' – from the top right down to the domestic police force – has devolved to the point where a growing swath of the general population is now actively afraid of them. Previously, it was only black people who had been trained by bitter experience to fear 'the man.' Now the rest of us are beginning to understand what they have been complaining about all these years." Continue reading
