Officer takes seized vehicles home, bills city for repairs

"A Eugene police officer has been reprimanded for improperly taking seized vehicles home with him, neglecting to tell his bosses about it and then charging the city for the time he claims to have spent repairing them. The officer told investigators that he had taken the vehicles home to fix them up so that they could be sold at a higher value as part of a city program that transfers the proceeds of auctioned items into a fund that aids crime victims, officials said. "A cop's dash-cam shows him slamming his car into a couple on a motorcycle. The impact was extremely violent and you can see the couple go flying. After the office realized what happens he stops his car and gets out. He then go out of his car and the video shows it looks like he seemed to be more concerned with his car than the couple he just seriously injured. News report on running man seeking help killed by North Carolina Police

"Officers responded to a 911 call of a suspicious man outside a woman's home in Charlotte. The man had been knocking on her door repeatedly. Police say that when they got there, a man matching the caller's description ran toward them. One of the officers pulled out his stun gun, but it malfunctioned. Another officer then opened fire, police said. Jonathan Ferrell died at the scene. He was shot several times. He was unarmed." Continue reading →

"On Tuesday, a grand jury decided not to indict a Texas trooper who had killed two unarmed Guatemalan immigrants after shooting them from a helicopter last year. A police officer in a helicopter shot at a nonviolent suspect and killed two innocent men, and his actions were deemed defensible because the DPS gave him authority to do so. Before he fell under intense scrutiny, McCraw had expressed no remorse for putting people on the ground in danger while using lethal force against a nonviolent suspect. A few months before the incident, he had told interviewers, 'We're really not apologetic about it. We've got an obligation to protect our men and women when we're trying to protect Texas.'" When I looked I saw one officer just walking right out of frame. A few seconds later the shop owner that had the key to the gate came and opened it for me as if she was telling me to go ahead and take photos of what I see. "The boy, who has not been named, was a student at H.L. Bourgeois High school. He had downloaded a phone application called 'The Real Strike' which utilizes the camera on a smart phone and superimposes a picture of a gun over the live-feed video. Whatever the camera phone points towards shows up on the screen with a graphic of a gun pointed towards it. The user can then use the app to simulate a mock shootout, and can record and share the results. "I grew up in Garland Texas (where this took place). And everyone in the DFW area knows which suburbs of Dallas have the worst police. Garland Police has been at the top of that list (as #1) with most people who have voiced their opinion for at least 30 years, stating that they find Garland Police to be the most disagreeable. "This mindset that any challenge to police authority is a threat that needs to be 'neutralized' is a dangerous one that is part of a greater nationwide trend that sets law enforcement officers beyond the reach of the Fourth Amendment. Equally problematic is the trend in the courts that acquits officers involved in such shootings, letting them off with barely a slap to the wrists. What exactly are we teaching these young officers in the police academy when the slightest thing, whether it be a hand in a pocket, a man running towards them, a flashlight on a keychain, or a dehumanizing stare can ignite a strong enough 'fear for their safety' to justify firing on an unarmed person?" It’s the law: Washington state lawmakers don’t get speeding tickets

"Washington state legislators headed to work can't get speeding tickets -- or so says the Washington State Patrol and at least one local police department. A spokesman for WSP says Washington lawmakers are constitutionally protected from receiving noncriminal traffic tickets during a legislative session, as well as 15 days before. A spokeswoman says The Tacoma Police Department abides by a similar policy. State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins says the privilege not only applies to moving violations near the state Capitol in Olympia, but potentially anywhere in the state. The logic?
