Alan Grayson on Syria strike: Military-industrial complex wants it, Americans don’t

"'The greatest norm, the highest norm in international law is that you don’t attack another country unilaterally without the authorization of the United Nations,' Grayson remarked. 'That’s the United Nations charter. It’s a fundamental principle. We can’t simply go in and bomb people whenever we feel like it, particularly when one man is arrogating to himself that decision.' White House deputy spokesman Josh Earnest has suggested the United States could strike Syria without help from the United Nations or allies. Earnest said the situation in Syria involved U.S. national security." Continue reading

The War Powers Act and Syria

"The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) a specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces. All this talk about 'consultations with Congress' is disinformation, unless first the language in the section quoted above is triggered which would then authorize the president 'to introduce' the U.S. armed forces into 'hostilities'." Obama administration hints it could act alone on Syria

"The United States hinted Thursday it could act alone to punish Syria for a chemical weapons attack. The Obama administration also denied that public skepticism dating to an Iraq war intelligence debacle was complicating its effort to justify possible military action against Syria. Obama, who came to power criticizing his predecessor George W. Bush’s go-it-alone approach on foreign policy, was confronted Thursday with a choice over whether to wait for allies or launch unilateral US action. Obama aides stress they envisage only 'limited' punitive action in Syria and dismiss comparisons with the US invasion of Iraq, which the president built his political career on opposing." Our American Dream Has Become The World’s Nightmare.

"Shortly after the 2003 intervention into Iraq I remember viewing a TV interview with Noam Chomsky where he compared America's pre-emptive actions there with Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939. At the time I thought his language was over-the-top and quite disingenuous. America was not National Socialist Germany. But Chomsky was precisely and prophetically correct. Everything from the time of 9/11 has been propelling the United States into an authoritarian fascist state. Our American dream has become the world's nightmare. Where other nations once viewed us with emulation and envy, now it is with fear, loathing, and revulsion. We have become what our parents fought WWII against." Continue reading

Making the World the ‘Enemy’

"After 9/11, President George W. Bush turned to Civil War precedents to create military tribunals for trying alleged 'terrorists.' But in applying those draconian rules to a worldwide battlefield, he created the nightmarish potential for a global totalitarianism, as retired U.S. Army JAG officer Todd E. Pierce explains." Chemical Weapons in Syria? Who Cares!

"It does not matter whether or not Obama gets Congressional approval for the strike. It does not matter whether 50 percent plus one in Congress vote in favor of an attack on Syria. It does not matter whether some form of chemical weapons were used in the war in Syria. It does not matter who used them if they were indeed used. it does not matter whether the Saudis are demanding that we overthrow Assad. It does not matter whether the Turks are demanding we overthrow Assad. It does not matter whether the Israelis demand that we overthrow Assad. What matters is that there is no grounds for the US to make war on Syria. It has not attacked us; it does not threaten us. On the contrary..." Continue reading

Congress To Holder: Explain Why NSA Supplies DEA Info Which It Then Launders

"For example, they might send info to the DEA about a likely drug deal, and the DEA would then tell its agents that they should come up with a pretense to stop a certain truck at a certain truck stop at a certain time. The agents would work with local police to concoct a reason to pull the truck over, and voila, drugs found. But, most importantly, at no point would the fact that such information was used to lead to the stop be revealed, and that's unconstitutional. If you're accused, you're supposed to have access to all of the evidence being used against you. Continue reading

President Obama, Don’t Strike Syria, Especially Without Congressional Approval

"If President Obama can get us into war in Syria without prior Congressional approval, it will set a terrible precedent: A future president could get us more easily into war in Iran without prior Congressional approval. Tell President Obama and Congress: There must be no US military action in Syria without Congressional debate and authorization. Congress is out of session right now. But there is no emergency that requires immediate, unconstitutional, illegal action. If there were an emergency that required immediate action, Congress could be called back into session. If there's no emergency that requires immediate action, then action can wait until Congress reconvenes." Continue reading

Obama invades Cyprus in order to NOT invade Syria

"I remember how devastated I felt as a young intelligence officer sitting in the Kuwaiti desert in early 2003 watching Colin Powell make the case to the United Nations for the invasion of Iraq. Most of the intelligence community at the time knew the case for war was totally bogus. And I remember my colleagues and I looking at each other asking, 'What WMDs are these people talking about??' It was obvious there was a hidden agenda very high up in the administration. Ten years later, the body count from the conflict exceeds 100,000 military and civilian casualties. Yet Iraq is a ‘free country’. And China is reaping the benefits, buying nearly half the oil that Iraq produces at nearly 1.5 million barrels per day." Continue reading
