Actuarial study: Obamacare law to bring double-digit percent increases to insurance premiums

"Medical claims costs — the biggest driver of health insurance premiums — will jump an average 32% for Americans' individual policies under the Affordable Care Act health care law, according to a study out Tuesday by the nation's leading group of financial risk analysts. While some states will see medical claims costs per person decline, the report prepared by the Society of Actuaries concluded that the overwhelming majority will see double-digit increases in their individual health insurance markets, where people purchase coverage directly from insurers. Much of the reason for the higher claims costs is that sicker people are expected to join the pool, the report said." Continue reading

Bauman’s Little Black Book of Buffoons

"Public servants who no longer serve the best interests of the public should always follow Sir Anthony Eden’s example and resign on moral grounds. And here in the U.S., the list of useless officials in our government is shocking and even demoralizing. Resign! What follows is just a small sample of them, albeit the top five in my little black book of who should fall on their swords – all of them buffoons." Continue reading

Furor Growing Against Obama Over ‘Monsanto Protection Act’

"The protests come on the heels of a massive petition campaign organized by the advocacy group Food Democracy Now, which gathered the signatures of more than 200,000 people who wanted Obama to veto HR 933 in order to stop Section 735 -- the so-called 'Monsanto Protection Act' -- from being codified into law. But Obama ignored it, instead choosing to sign a bill that effectively bars federal courts from being able to halt the sale or planting of GMO or GE crops and seeds, no matter what health consequences from the consumption of these products may come to light in the future." Bill Bonner: What a wicked world!

"The insiders risk losing everything if they run out of money. Without money, they can’t buy votes. They can’t continue to move resources to themselves. And they can’t afford their phoney programmes and claptrap redistributions systems either. In short, without access to money everything falls apart. So, a government such as Cyprus will do anything – including stabbing its major industries in the back – in order to keep the cash flowing. Cyprus is a tax haven and a money centre. Clipping bank accounts is ruinous for its business. But if that’s what it takes to stay in business, that’s what the Cypriot insiders will do. Is Britain different? France? America?" “Stomp on Jesus’ Name or Flunk My Class,” Says Professor. Student Refuses. Gone!

"A student in a class in the academically peripheral Florida Atlantic University was told by the instructor to stomp on the name of Jesus. Do it, or flunk. The student refused. He then protested to the administration. Result: the student has been told not to attend the class, not to talk to other students, and shut up. This has hit the press. Now there will be a huge stink. Some administrative bureaucrat has defended this action. My guess: if the instructor were white, he would not have his contract renewed. But now the administration is caught between a rock and a hard place. Either it gets accused of racism or it gets accused of blatant stupidity. I love it." Continue reading

Unwise Deepening of an Unnecessary Crisis

"It is difficult to avoid the conclusion we have made in past articles that much of what passes for solutions in the EU are actually being implemented to aggravate what is already injured. The idea perhaps is that a lingering crisis gives Brussels's Eurocrats the ability to further implement a 'deeper' political union. Are you an investor? Are you betting on the euro – or even the EU? In the era of the Internet, when people increasingly understand how the 'great game' is played, the deliberate (evolutionary) deepening of a crisis is perhaps unwise." Continue reading

Essex school bans triangular flapjacks after injury

"A school has banned triangular flapjacks after a pupil was injured by one. Dinner staff at Castle View school in Canvey Island, Essex, were told to cut the treat into squares or rectangles following the incident. It is understood that the triangular version was banned after one was thrown, hitting a boy in the face." Continue reading

Mike Bloomberg: “I do think there are certain times we should infringe on your freedom”

"'I do think there are certain times we should infringe on your freedom,' Mr. Bloomberg said, during an appearance on NBC. He made the statement during discussion of his soda ban — just shot down by the courts — and insistence that his fight to control sugary drink portion sizes in the city would go forth." The Top 4 Lessons of the Cyprus Debacle You Shouldn’t Have to Re-learn

"Lesson #1 - Do Not Trust Politicians. Lesson #2 - Ditch the 'This Can’t Happen Here' Mentality. Lesson #3 - Recognize the Pattern (Bank Holiday, Wealth Confiscation, Capital Controls). Lesson #4 - Take Action Before it is Too Late. You must take precautionary action and internationalize before it is too late to act. Unless you are part of the political elite, you won’t know exactly when the window of opportunity will slam shut. For Cypriots that moment came on the morning of Saturday, March 16 , 2013. It is better to be a year early than a minute late." Continue reading

The Iraq War: 10 Years Later – Anthony Gregory

"Operation Iraqi Freedom unleashed terrorism, draconian Shariah law, and the systematic persecution of women and religious minorities. Bush’s gang established martial law, deadly checkpoints, and torture chambers; used white phosphorous, flooded the country with sewage and disease, destroyed infrastructure that twelve previous years of U.S. war and sanctions had yet left standing, confiscated Iraqis’ guns, and implemented central taxation and economic planning. Wilson’s WWI bungling helped lead to communism, Nazism, and WWII; Bush’s bungling has exacerbated jihadism and will reverberate for decades. One good resulted: Global disrespect for American empire."
