FBI Pursuing Real-Time Gmail Spying Powers as “Top Priority” for 2013

"Despite the pervasiveness of law enforcement surveillance of digital communication, the FBI still has a difficult time monitoring Gmail, Google Voice, and Dropbox in real time. But that may change soon, because the bureau says it has made gaining more powers to wiretap all forms of Internet conversation and cloud storage a 'top priority' this year. FBI general counsel Andrew Weissmann said that the FBI wants the power to mandate real-time surveillance of everything from Dropbox and online games ('the chat feature in Scrabble') to Gmail and Google Voice. 'Those communications are being used for criminal conversations,' he said." Continue reading

Homeland Security Using Video Games to Recruit Top Students as Cyber Warriors

"Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is seeking up to 600 new student hackers to combat what they claim is the increasing danger of cyber attacks on critical infrastructure throughout the country. Rather than the normal propaganda techniques used to lure young Americans into other branches of the government, Homeland Security is taking a different route which includes the use of sophisticated video games to essentially promote job opportunities within their agency to young impressionable high school students." Creator of drone casualties visualization hopes data will ‘shock’ people

"Wesley Grubbs of Pitch Interactive told HuffPost Live on Tuesday that he created an interactive graph of the U.S. drone campaign in Pakistan to highlight civilian causalities. 'We want to shock people,' he explained. 'What we tried to do though with this was not just shock people with the number of casualties, but to shock people with the amount of information that we really don’t know.' The data visualization illustrates the number of casualties from drone strikes in Pakistan between 2004 and 2013, categorizing the victims as either children, civilians, alleged combatants, or high-profile targets." Another California scheme to fleece motorists and eviscerate their rights

"AB666 would require that these tickets be prosecuted through an administrative hearing conducted by the jurisdiction running the camera program rather than through an independent traffic court. ...AB666 makes the vehicle owner responsible for violations committed by someone else unless you can prove who was driving the vehicle...And if you don't, they will put a hold on your registration until you pay up. Not bad enough? The hold on your registration gets applied as soon as they mail you the ticket, not after you are found guilty. It gets worse. The tickets are considered Prima Facie evidence against you. No other evidence has to be submitted against you." Continue reading

Maryland Senate Votes To Cover Up Speed Camera Errors

"Earlier this year, a number of lawmakers in Maryland vowed to reform the way speed cameras were operated in the state. Officials were rocked by the revelation that more than 5 percent of photo ticket recipients in Baltimore were likely innocent with lax oversight and faulty photo radar equipment to blame for the bogus citations. On Monday, the state Senate voted 46-1 to cover up future errors." Continue reading

Cyprus’ New Reality: Cash Society Without Cash

"Cyprus’ sudden acquiescence to demands by international lenders to confiscate 40 percent or more of bank deposits over 100,000 euros ($130,000) and limit withdrawals to 100 euros per day, while keeping the banks shut, has turned much of the country overnight into a fright-filled society with many people unable to get their hands on enough cash to pay for anything except food. Credit cards weren’t being accepted because businesses believe they won’t be paid, making the instruments as worthless as the plastic of which they are made. Checks weren’t being accepted either as Cyprus has become a cash society, even if most people are cashless." Continue reading

Cyprus bail-out leaves ‘bitter taste’ for residents

"Standing in front of a cash machine on a street corner in Nicosia, Andreas Christou could hardly contain his fury. 'My money is in there and they won’t let me take it out!' he said, a few moments after withdrawing a paltry €100 – the maximum allowable after a draconian new capital control measure was introduced on Sunday. The 52-year-old businessman holds an account with Laiki Bank, the hardest hit of Cyprus’s debt-laden lenders. It will now effectively be dissolved under the terms of a deal brokered between international creditors and Nicos Anastasiades, the president of Cyprus, during marathon talks in Brussels." Europe Deploys Next Generation Speed Cameras

"Struggling European economies are investing big money in stealth speed camera technology designed to mail tickets to motorists who have no way of knowing they are being watched. Eurozone economies have been shrinking, with both France and Spain under heightened scrutiny for failure to meet deficit reduction targets set by the European Union. Ratings agency Standard and Poor's called the situation in Spain and France 'socially explosive' in a statement to Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung. Both countries are now deploying the next generation of speed cameras." Continue reading

Retired EPA attorney leads the opposition to ‘smart meters’ in Maryland

"Tea partiers and Green Partiers, liberal Californians and conservative Texans have argued that the meters can cause health problems, or can be hacked, or give utilities too much information about customers' daily lives, or can overheat and cause fires, or underdeliver on financial benefits. The attorneys general of Connecticut, Illinois and Michigan have said in the past few years that smart-meter plans in their states do not clearly benefit consumers, given the multimillion-dollar installation costs. BGE, which began installing smart meters last year and expects to finish in 2014, will have to ask for reimbursement of the $282 million not covered by a federal grant." Continue reading

I Hate Government Street Sweepers

"Years ago, before the militarization on the police state and the installment of omnipotent confiscatory governments in America's cities, these things were 'make work' for the government employees and unions. In the era of No Freedom, they have become revenue centers for municipalities. Cities where parking is scarce, like Long Beach, conduct scheming ticket sweeps because people have no where else to park, and the city adds $9M per year to the city coffers by pulling off this extortion tactic. Long Beach's Dictatorial Staff even went so far to suggest the use of 'automated license plate recognition technology' on its convoy of street sweepers." Continue reading
