John Kerry says North Korea conditions for talks ‘unacceptable’

"US Secretary of State John Kerry Thursday dismissed a set of pre-conditions laid out by North Korea for talks as 'unacceptable,' calling them an opening 'gambit' from Pyongyang. The isolated North on Thursday responded for the first time to an offer from Kerry during his weekend visit to the Korean peninsula to return to the negotiating table in a bid to defuse heightened nuclear tensions. The demands by the North’s main military body included the withdrawal of UN sanctions and a permanent end to South Korea-US joint military drills." Continue reading

Glenn Greenwald: The Boston bombing produces familiar and revealing reactions

"Regardless of your views of justification and intent: whatever rage you're feeling toward the perpetrator of this Boston attack, that's the rage in sustained form that people across the world feel toward the US for killing innocent people in their countries. Whatever sadness you feel for yesterday's victims, the same level of sadness is warranted for the innocent people whose lives are ended by American bombs. However profound a loss you recognize the parents and family members of these victims to have suffered, that's the same loss experienced by victims of US violence." Continue reading

Muslim woman reports assault following ‘dark-skinned’ Boston bombing suspect reports

"A Muslim woman in Boston says that she was attacked by a white man on on Wednesday morning because he was apparently enraged by the Boston Marathon bombings and convinced, despite a lack of evidence, that the perpetrators were Muslim. Boston Marathon Bomb Coverage Reveals Media Hypocrisy and Double Standards

"In the last decade, the U.S. has occupied Afghanistan and Iraq while bombing Yemen, Pakistan, Libya, and Somalia, imposed blockades and sanctions that prevent the poor and elderly in foreign countries from acquiring food and medicine, and yet one can spend a great deal of time searching in vain for any faces, names, or accounts of the victims from the American press. Apparently these acts aren't terrorism or mass murder, just 'foreign policy.' Why has the media covered this bombing with a fine-toothed comb, including bloody and grisly photos, yet it completely ignores the unspeakable violence when initiated by the state?" Continue reading
