TX gun classes reporting influx of teachers

"The push to provide firearms training to teachers has taken hold in Texas, where, as NBC News reported on Tuesday, hundreds of instructors are hitting the firing ranges. KXAS-TV reported on Monday that the state’s lieutenant governor, David Dewhurst (R) will ask the state senate to consider using public funding to pay for schools to send employees to similar courses. State law allows teachers with concealed handgun permits to bring them to campus if granted permission by their district superintendents." Continue reading

Colleges Lose Pricing Power

"Facing stagnant family income, shaky job prospects for graduates and a smaller pool of high-school graduates, more schools are reining in tuition increases and giving out larger scholarships to attract students. Moody's also attributed the enrollment decline at some public universities to a 'heightened scrutiny of the value of higher education' after years of tuition increases and stagnating family income. The credit-rating firm said in its report that more students are 'increasingly attending more affordable community colleges, studying part time, or electing to enter the workforce without the benefit of a college education.'" Judge rules TX school district can make students wear locator chips

"A U.S. District Judge upheld a Texas school district’s rule requiring students to wear locator chips on Tuesday, Reuters reported. Palm Beach County teachers seeking gun training, permits in wake of Sandy Hook shooting

"Following last month’s fatal shooting at a Connecticut elementary school, gun ranges throughout Palm Beach County — and the country — are reporting an increase in teachers coming in for gun training and concealed weapons permits. Some may see it as an unorthodox response to the Sandy Hook tragedy, given that Florida law still bars teachers and others from carrying firearms on school grounds. But local gun shops say the uptick is a natural response." Continue reading

Idaho Adopts Khan’s Free Online Academy

"The state of Idaho’s educational bureaucracy next year will allow public school students in two dozen schools to take Khan Academy’s free courses for full credit. This is a test. This is a huge breakthrough for liberty. It means that a state has tentatively accepted the idea that online education that is provided by a legally independent third party who is not in any way under control of the state’s educational establishment may be as good as classroom education." MontCo school suspends 6-year-old for pretend gunshot

"The 6-year-old, who attends Roscoe R. Nix Elementary School in Silver Spring, made a gun with his hands, pointed it at another student and said 'pow,' according to Robin Ficker, the boy's attorney. He was given a one-day suspension, with a conference on the matter planned for Jan. 2, the day students return to school from winter break. According to a letter sent by Assistant Principal Renee Garraway to the child's parents, this was not the first time something like this had happened. 'Your son ... was involved in a serious incident,' Garraway wrote. '[He] threatened to shoot a student. He was spoken to earlier today about a similar incident.'" Continue reading

Petition Proposes Gun Free Zone for School President’s Daughters Attend

"The petition states that 'If Gun Free Zones are sufficient protection for our children,' meaning regular Americans' children, 'then Gun Free Zones should be good enough for politicians.' Likely spurred by a Breitbart report published earlier this week pointing out that the president’s daughters attend Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. – a school that has no less than 11 armed security guards at all times – the petition is quickly garnering the signatures needed to necessitate a response from the Obama administration."
