Why Do Millions of Russians Have Car Dashboard Cams?

"According to a report last year by Al Jazeera, an estimated one million Russian motorists have dashboard video cameras installed in their cars. This is not to capture moments like the meteor flight or even miraculous survivals of horrifying highway crashes. No, Al Jazeera reported that the cams are there to help stamp out police corruption." Paper Claims SEC Regulation is Biased … In Other News, Sky Is Blue

"Former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission staffers who now work in the private sector may have helped derail last year's effort to reform the $2.6 trillion money market fund industry, a report said. The case study on money market fund lobbying is part of a 60-page report by the Project on Government Oversight (POGO). It is one example within a broader review by the non-profit government watchdog that examines in detail how the 'revolving door' at the SEC may have impacted policy and enforcement decisions over a 10-year period." SEC Head Nominee Mary Jo White’s Latest Conflict of Interest

"Here’s the big question for Mary Jo White: If she becomes chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, where will her interests lie? With the public that pays her salary? Or with the people handing her the big bucks? White is the white-collar defense lawyer and former U.S. attorney nominated by President Barack Obama to lead the SEC. Upon leaving New York-based Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, the law firm will give her $42,500 a month in retirement pay for life, or more than $500,000 a year. This means she has a direct interest in Debevoise’s future profits, and therefore an incentive to help make sure only good things come the firm’s way." Continue reading

LAPD: Collateral Damage For The Sake Of The State

"Soldiers and other killers for hire in Iraq and Afghanistan are carefully trained to stop thinking of their targets as human beings. Otherwise they'll flinch and hesitate when they need to kill. 'If you ask yourself, ‘did he kiss his kids goodbye this morning,’ you’re through,' I remember one sniper saying. And I remember this one, too: 'Sorry, The chick got in the way.' Many LAPD and other police force members are veterans of those wars. Do you think they can forget that training? Turn it off like a switch? The LAPD-Dorner case has proven that they can't." Christopher Dorner and the Chaos Inherent to Government

"The LAPD and surrounding police departments were out in full force, their penchant for unleashing deadly violence without warning on no more basis than a hunch on open display. In truly military fashion, police even unleashed a surveillance drone as part of the search. Understandably, many felt unsafe. And for what? While bringing Dorner in — or down — was clearly a priority, the way in which he was pursued, the pile of resources devoted to his capture, and the unprovoked violence inflicted on civilians made it clear that that priority wasn’t rooted in public safety." L.A. Residents Plead With LAPD On Signs, Shirts: ‘Don’t Shoot, I’m Not Chris Dorner’

"In response to the LAPD shooting at least 3 innocent people in a manhunt for Chris Dorner, the fugitive ex-cop and alleged murderer they’re hunting with U.S. military spy drones, residents of Los Angeles have begun wearing shirts and placing signs and bumper stickers on their vehicles that read, 'Don’t shoot, I’m not Chris Dorner. Thank you.'" Continue reading

Why Police Lie Under Oath

"Are police officers necessarily more trustworthy than alleged criminals? I think not. Not just because the police have a special inclination toward confabulation, but because, disturbingly, they have an incentive to lie. In this era of mass incarceration, the police shouldn’t be trusted any more than any other witness, perhaps less so. Agencies receive cash rewards for arresting high numbers of people for drug offenses, no matter how minor the offenses or how weak the evidence. Law enforcement has increasingly become a numbers game. And as it has, police officers’ tendency to regard procedural rules as optional and to lie and distort the facts has grown as well." Ex-Hillsboro cop who shot at police surrendered with wife, daughter at his side

"Timothy Cannon surrendered after a gun fight with 10 Washington County cops, descending the stairs of his two-story Forest Grove home, his arms linked with those of his wife and daughter, according to court records. Timothy Cannon had been drinking off and on throughout the week, Lisa Cannon told a dispatcher during the incident. On Saturday, Jan. 19, he drank all day, she said. According to court records, a detective observed medications in the home prescribed for Timothy Cannon, including drugs treating pain, anxiety, panic attacks and depression. The medications have side effects that can result in 'altered mental status.'" Continue reading

The Strange Moral Compass of Christopher Dorner

"Amid all the endless yabbering about 'gun culture' in the wake of Sandy Hook, little attention is paid to the idea that military and police institutions often create, or at least enable, psychopaths who really know how to use guns. Why should we trust our government with guns when they churn out people like this nutjob? The most poetic ending possible would be for a well-armed civilian to take Dorner out cold."
