Podcast: Pushing Beyond the Confederate Flag Soundbites

In this episode of Thoughts from Maharrey Head, I try to push beyond the simple soundbites in the Confederate flag debate.

After listening to the Confederate flag debate for several days, I was left feeling like neither “side” of the issue really captures the crux of the matter.

One side screams racism. One side screams heritage. You know, maybe they are both right from a certain point of view. But I think the controversy illuminates some deeper more important issues.

In this week’s podcast, I try to dig beyond the 30 second soundbites and the Facebook memes to uncover some of the more substantive issues beneath the debate. Should things be banned? Does every reference to the Confederacy imply support for slavery? And what does all of this mean in the context of state sovereignty, political self-determination and decentralization?
