Karl Denninger: Watch for Market Dislocations

"The big picture is this: We have all lived for the last 30 years in a world where we believe that the price of certain things will always go up – houses being one of them, stocks being another. We have also lived in a time when an insane amount of monetary inflation has taken place. Most people look at the Consumer Price Index or some other government-provided thing, or they look at M1 OR M2, the growth of the money supply, for example. But what you really ought to be looking at for the growth of the monetary base is the total amount of money and credit that is in the system, and add those two together. When you do that, you find a very ugly picture." Continue reading

How Going Over the ”Fiscal Cliff” Will Affect You

"Kahn projects that a kick the can deal will increase taxes by $530 billion. Specifically, he sees strong support for an end to the payroll tax cut, an end to Bush tax cuts, and broad support for short-term 'tax extenders.' On the spending side, no further extensions of unemployment and a cut in Medicare payments (the doc fix). Total spending cuts $170 billion. Got that? Tax increases of $530 billion and cuts of only $170 billion. In other words, the 'kick the can deal' is a huge tax increase. They are set to scare the public and then take more money out of their pockets." Continue reading

61.2% Voted For Nobody

"That’s my tentative estimate (based on Google election result and population statistics) of the percentage of Americans who voted for nobody for President of the United States on Tuesday. About 38.8% of the population supported one of the candidates; about 19.5% of the population supported the alleged 'winner.' 61.2% of the population did not consent to be ruled at all, and fewer than one in five Americans consented to be ruled by Barack Obama. The figures are likely similar for most or all of the 435 US Representatives and 33 US Senators 'elected' on Tuesday." Continue reading

Greeks clash with riot police as politicans pass austerity measures

"Conservative and socialist lawmakers from Greece's three-party coalition government voted to adopt the €18.5bn budget cuts by 2016 despite protests earlier in the day by more than 70.000 people who massed outside the parliament. Violent protesters threw fire bombs and rocks at police, who responded with stun grenades, tear gas and the first use of water cannon in Greece in years. Inside the building, lawmakers interrupted the debate as Parliament employees went on strike to protest wage cuts. Pasok leader Evangelos Venizelos announced that five of his party's deputies who voted against the measures were expelled from the party." Continue reading

If You Want Good Tax Policy, Choose Jersey (but not New Jersey!)

"I’m in the Bailiwick of Jersey, which is a UK dependent territory off the coast of France. Jersey is a so-called tax haven, which I applaud because it helps encourage better tax policy in less enlightened parts of the globe. Because I’m such a cultured and sophisticated guy, today I used some of my free time to visit the Jersey Museum. I now know lots of useless trivia about how a tiny island 15 miles from France wound up as an English territory. But I also found something very interesting in the section on the economic history of Jersey. The museum explicitly recognizes the role of low taxation in promoting a prosperous society." I apologize for what you’re about to read

"Even when I was in Myanmar ten days ago, local pundits were engaged in the Obamney debate. Chile. Spain. Germany. Finland. Hong Kong. Thailand. Singapore. It was inescapable. The entire world seems fixated on this belief that it actually matters who becomes the President of the United States anymore… or that one of these two guys is going to ‘fix’ things. Fact is, it doesn’t matter. Not one bit. And I’ll show you mathematically." Continue reading

Glenn Greenwald: Petraeus scandal is reported with compelled veneration of all things military

"There are several revealing lessons about this media swooning for Petraeus even as he exits from a scandal that would normally send them into tittering delight. First, military worship is the central religion of America's political and media culture. The military is by far the most respected and beloved institution among the US population - a dangerous fact in any democracy - and, even assuming they wanted to (which they don't), our brave denizens of establishment journalism are petrified of running afoul of that kind of popular sentiment. Second, it is truly remarkable what ends people's careers in Washington - and what does not end them." Continue reading
