Security experts say new electronic voting machines can be hacked

"The 2010 discovery of the Stuxnet cyberweapon, which used a thumb drive to attack Iran's nuclear facilities and spread among its computers, illustrated how one type of attack could work. Most at risk are paperless e-voting machines, which don’t print out any record of votes, meaning the electronically stored results could be altered without anyone knowing they had been changed. In a tight election, the result could be the difference between winning and losing. A Monitor analysis shows that four swing states – Pennsylvania, Virginia, Colorado, and Florida – rely to varying degrees on paperless machines." Continue reading

U.S. and Canada launch joint cybersecurity plan

"The action plan, under the auspices of the US Department of Homeland Security and Public Safety Canada, aims to better protect critical digital infrastructure and improve the response to cyber incidents. UN Seeking Global Internet Surveillance for Terror, Propaganda

"The UN wants a planetary regime to force companies to spy on their customers, keep the data, and hand it over to authorities. The international organization noted approvingly that entities such as the European Union were already working to impose the measures. However, not all governments are on board yet, the report complained. Social networking services such as Facebook and Twitter were specifically highlighted as potential tools for 'terrorists' to spread 'propaganda' and 'extremist rhetoric.' The report also notes that search engines have made it easier to find 'terror propaganda' online." Continue reading

Missouri Lt. Gov. protests UN election monitors previously invited by Pres. Bush

"Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder (R) on Thursday warned that 'Albanian' election monitors who will observe polling places on November 6 are part of President Barack Obama’s plan to let the United Nations take over the United States. Kinder said he was inspired by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who threatened to arrested the international election monitors if they come within 100 feet of a polling place. Following a request from eight civil rights groups, the Organization of Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), a United Nations partner, had agreed to send 44 election monitors to the United States." UN to investigate civilian deaths from U.S. drone strikes

"The United Nations is to set up a dedicated investigations unit in Geneva to examine the legality of drone attacks in cases where civilians are killed in so-called ‘targeted’ counter-terrorism operations. The announcement was made by Ben Emmerson QC, a UN special rapporteur, in a speech to Harvard law school in which he condemned secret rendition and waterboarding as crimes under international law. His forthright comments, directed at both US presidential candidates, will be seen as an explicit challenge to the prevailing US ideology of the global war on terror." Continue reading

A Lesson in Empire Building: The Use of “Foreign Aid”

"It's one thing to hear, or read about, the staggering number of U.S. dollars that get doled out to foreign nations. It's another to actually see it visually on a map. As you can see, with very few exceptions, just about every single nation in the world receives U.S. taxpayer money. How can this be? How can a nation that is $16 Trillion in debt possibly hand out even a dime? Imagine going up to the average college kid with a student loan debt of $26,600 and asking him/her for a large amount of money. They'd look at you like you were crazy." Continue reading

US ‘Secret’ Drone Base and Ron Paul’s Foreign Policy

"It is from this massive, 500 acre base run by the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), that virtually all the non-Afghan war drones are launched. It is the center of the US drone war against al-Qaeda (except for those al-Qaeda elements in Libya and Syria with which the US administration is allied -- think of those as Eastasia). Appropriately, the base, called Camp Lemonnier, is located on grounds used earlier by the French Foreign Legion -- the non-French arm of the French military used to keep the French colonial empire in line. In Lemonnier we see both under one roof cash to those who do what they are told and drones for those who do not." Continue reading

Former cricket captain turned politician Imran Khan detained and ‘interrogated over drone views’ by U.S. immigration

"Imran Khan, the former Pakistan cricket captain turned politician, was taken off an international flight from Canada to New York and questioned by US immigration officials over his views on drone strikes and jihad. Khan, who has been at the forefront of a high-profile campaign as leader of the Pakistan Movement for Justice party (PTI) to end US drone strikes in northern Pakistan, had been in Canada to give a speech and was on his way to a fundraising dinner in the US on Friday." U.S. ‘coordinates weapon deliveries’ to Syria rebels: Russia

"'Washington is aware of the deliveries of various weapons to illegal armed groups active in Syria. Moreover, judging by the declarations of US officials published in US media, the US coordinates and provides logistical assistance in such deliveries,' the foreign ministry said in a statement. Russia’s top general Nikolai Makarov on Wednesday said rebels fighting against Bashar al-Assad’s army in Syria are using US-made Stingers, a type of shoulder-launched missile systems also known as MANPADs. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland promptly denied that the US is delivering any such, or any other, weapons to the rebels." Continue reading

Government Gives Samsung and Motorola Monopoly Patent Grants; then Probes them for “Patent Abuse”

"The state is schizophrenic. It grants monopolies aimed at limiting competition (patents and copyright), and then penalizes companies for using ('abusing') them, in contravention of state antitrust law–so that there is a 'tension' between these state laws. Then courts have to 'balance' these against each other. Each state law gives the state an excuse to ratchet up its power. Here’s an idea: get rid of both antitrust and patent law. (Likewise, there is also a 'tension' between copyright censorship, and the right to free speech.)" Continue reading
