Dr. Joseph Bonneau Wins NSA Award, Calls For NSA To Be Abolished

"Engineers and researchers like Bonneau have a unique and important role to play in fighting back against NSA oversteps. As Michael Hirsh noted in the Atlantic last month, tech companies have contributed enormously to wiring up Big Brother -- companies like Palantir Technologies, Eagle Alliance (of Computer Sciences Corp. and Northrup Grumman) and Booz Allen Hamilton. The only way the government gets to spy on everyone is when people who are intelligent and innovative enough to build scalable surveillance technologies decide to help them. Hopefully Bonneau’s example will inspire more cryptographers and security engineers to speak out." Continue reading

Young Catholics flood Rio’s streets after Pope Francis speech

"Heeding Pope Francis’ call to shake up the Church, hundreds of thousands of young Catholics marched across Rio on Saturday, singing, beating drums and chanting 'this is the pope’s youth!' They waved flags from around the world — Brazil, Australia, South Africa, the United States — and pitched tents on the crescent-shaped beach of Copacabana for an all-night vigil and final mass with the pope to cap World Youth Day festivities. Since his election in March, history’s first Latin American pope has sought to re-energize Catholics, using his Rio trip to urge young believers to spread the Gospel and 'make a mess' in their dioceses." Pope Francis condemns ‘culture of individualism’ for economic inequality

"On Thursday, the pontiff unleashed the most powerful and politically loaded rhetoric of his trip, attacking the 'culture of selfishness and individualism' and urging more efforts to fight hunger and poverty. The throngs were largely kept at bay by security barriers, but the pope kissed babies and shook hands with well-wishers. Police helicopters buzzed overheads, and police snipers watched the crowd from rooftops. He also gave a sharply worded condemnation of moves to legalise drug use during a visit on Wednesday to a rehabilitation centre in Brazil." Continue reading

Senate Democrats to Obama: ‘It Would Be Great To Have A Woman’ As Fed Chief

"In another boost for Ms. Yellen, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) said in an interview with Bloomberg television, due to air this weekend, that while both Mr. Summers and Ms. Yellen were well qualified, 'it would be great to have a woman'' nominated to the post. If nominated and confirmed, Ms. Yellen would be the first female Fed chief. Republicans in the Senate have expressed increasing opposition to the Fed's $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program. Ms. Yellen has been instrumental in the continuation of the bond-buying program, and is known to be a strong proponent of the Fed's easy-money policies." Continue reading

Pope Francis warns Latin America against legalizing drugs

"Pope Francis has warned Latin America against legalizing drugs, arguing that liberal policies under consideration in his home region will not reduce the problem. 'A reduction in the spread and influence of drug addiction will not be achieved by a liberalization of drug use, as is currently being proposed in various parts of Latin America,' he said on the third day of his trip. Guatemala’s president has called for legalization, a vision shared by ex-presidents in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia but opposed by the United States and Mexican governments. Uruguayan President Jose Mujica has proposed legalizing marijuana." Continue reading

Republican battles for Medicaid funding turn to God and morality

"Most Republicans oppose Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as a costly, ineffective and unnecessary expansion of government. But some Republican governors, like Arizona's Jan Brewer and Michigan's Rick Snyder, have broken ranks to embrace the law's Medicaid expansion as a practical way to help the poor while infusing their state budgets with billions of dollars in federal funding to pay for it. Ohio's John Kasich has gone further. His message of morality goes straight to the Republican Party's allegiance to traditional American values including charity, and should resonate with religious conservatives within its influential Tea Party faction." The Curiously Uncurious Ben Bernanke

"If I were chairman of the Federal Reserve and didn't understand the forces that move gold, learning about them would be near the top of my to-do list, if for no other reason than a large swath of the investment community uses gold as a barometer to evaluate how good a job I'm doing. Bernanke's clueless quote paints a stark contrast between the academic and real world. Upon observing the recent correction in the price of gold, how many asset managers do you think threw their hands up in confusion and proclaimed that no one can possibly know what's going on, so why even try?" Bob Higgs: Where’s the Outrage?

"We have now reached a condition in which state authorities know an immense amount about the personal lives of virtually everyone in the U.S. and many foreigners, as well. Do people suppose that this access to personal information will be used only for the pursuit of terrorists? Anyone who has looked even superficially into previous government information-collection programs knows better. State authorities will, at minimum, employ the communications data and other personal information now at their fingertips to pursue various sorts of criminals, especially persons suspected of tax evasion. Moreover, they will almost certainly use the information for partisan political purposes." Continue reading

Ingham County judge rules Detroit bankruptcy be withdrawn

"Ruling the governor and Detroit’s emergency manager violated the state constitution, an Ingham County Circuit judge ordered Friday that Detroit’s federal bankruptcy filing be withdrawn. 'It’s absolutely needed,' said Judge Rosemary Aquilina, observing she hopes Gov. Rick Snyder 'reads certain sections of the (Michigan) constitution and reconsiders his actions.' Prior to her ruling, the judge criticized the Snyder administration and Schuette’s office over their hasty move. 'It’s cheating, sir, and it’s cheating good people who work,' the judge said. 'It’s also not honoring the (U.S.) president, who took (Detroit’s auto companies) out of bankruptcy.'" Continue reading
