Do-Nothing Congress? Americans Think Congress Passes Too Many Laws

"Asked if 'Congress passes too many laws,' 56 percent of Americans said Congress passes too many laws, while 40 percent disagreed. When Congress does take action, Americans don’t like the resulting laws. Over two-thirds, 67 percent, said Congress passes 'the wrong kinds of laws.' Still, despite their disappointment in the volume and types of legislation Congress passes, the public wants lawmakers to get something done. Sixty-seven percent of Americans told Reason-Rupe they want members of Congress to 'work together and compromise more, even if I do not like the resulting laws.'" Continue reading →

Cop Gets Six Months For Killing Mackala Ross and Delores Epps

"Former Memphis police officer Alex Beard was speeding to a call with no siren when he rammed into a car, killing 13-year-old Mackala Ross and her mother, Delores Epps, age 53. Mackala’s father, Michael Ross, was severely injured, but survived the crash. This week the former officer was offered a plea deal by prosecutors: six months in jail. Mr. Ross said the sentence was like a 'slap in my face.' The prosecutor said 'this was the best that could be done.' Hmm. "So, there you have it. According to America, all Americans living abroad are 'offshore tax dodgers' since they are taxed where they live to pay for the infrastructure they use. Why does America seek to trash its diaspora? Because it believes that they are pirates sailing around with stolen treasure. Yet, the impact of US policy on Americans living abroad has never been an American concern, as one fellow kindly stated to one who does not live in America. The US government clearly doesn’t give a damn if Americans are harmed as a result of US policy, but it is eager to brand its expats as 'tax cheats' and to throw them away as 'trash'." Students say they will continue protesting ‘war criminal’ David Petraeus

"Students at the City University of New York have said they will continue protesting against David Petraeus and pledged to 'make his time in New York a living hell' after a video emerged showing the former general being hounded as he left the university on Monday. Petraeus, who served as commanding general in Iraq, overseeing all coalition forces in the country, is teaching a course titled 'Are We On the Threshold of the North American Decade?' Hunter College professor Sandor John, who helped organise the protest, told CNN that 'a lot of our students are from countries that have been targeted by the United States'. South Korean troops kill man trying to swim North

"South Korean troops shot dead a man trying to swim across a border river into North Korea on Monday after he ignored repeated warnings to turn back, the defence ministry said. The spokesman said Nam was believed to have been trying to defect to the North, and had jumped into the river with a flotation device to help him get across. Hours before the shooting, hundreds of South Korean factory supervisors drove across a nearby border crossing into North Korea after both sides agreed to reopen a joint industrial zone shut down in April." "The U.S. use of drones in the 'war on terror' includes what is called a 'double tap,' meaning sending a second drone to the same area, in what amounts to targeting rescuers who are responding to the first attack. This isn’t new, not the action nor the reporting. What does it tell us, that 'double tapping' continues, about the decisions of the Obama administration, and the reactions, or lack thereof, from the U.S. public? Michael Kelly’s conclusion that the fact that double tapping 'is now normalized as a common tactic of the U.S. drone war is stunning' seems accurate to me. Report: Half of Syrian rebels are hardline jihadists or Al-Qaeda operatives

"Of the rebel forces, IHS Jane’s estimates that around 10,000 are jihadists fighting for groups linked to Al-Qaeda and another 30,000 to 35,000 are hardline Islamists, who differ from jihadists in that they are concentrated only on the Syrian conflict, and not on the global Islamist fight. 'The insurgency is now dominated by groups which have at least an Islamist viewpoint on the conflict,' Charles Lister, author of the analysis, told the British newspaper. 'The idea that it is mostly secular groups leading the opposition is just not borne out.
