Redditors Raise More Than 32 Bitcoins (over $4,000) for Homeless Shelter

"In May of this year, the Pensacola City Council passed a 'camping ban' ordinance despite significant opposition. The ordinance bans camping on city-owned and residential property and prohibits sleeping, bathing and shaving in public restrooms. The ordinance effectively make it a crime to be homeless. In his post, Greg called Bitcoiners to action by sharing his experience and offering to match donations made to Sean’s Outpost. Hundreds of donations came in (and were matched) with several donations over $100. Poll Finds Few Think We’re Winning War on Drugs

"Four decades after President Richard Nixon ushered in the modern war on drugs, fewer than one out of 20 Americans think it is being won, according to a new poll. A Rasmussen Reports poll released on Sunday found that only 4% of respondents believe that the US is 'winning' the war on drugs. Some 82% said it is 'losing.' 'Americans continue to overwhelmingly believe that the so-called war on drugs is failing, but they are more divided on how much the United States should be spending on it,' Rasmussen concluded. PayPal unfreezes $45,000 cancer donation after media investigation

"A $45,000 donation for an Auckland man's cancer treatment has finally been released by electronic payment firm PayPal. The company, which processes online transactions, put a hold on the donation after it was picked up by its money-laundering filters. The money was meant to fund private chemotherapy treatment using an expensive new drug for Justin Crockett, who has an aggressive brain tumour. Mrs Crockett rang PayPal without success and said she felt 'helpless' and 'stressed out'. 'I just think it's a bit appalling that they have that power to freeze it. It's not their money. New Zealand passes law allowing domestic surveillance

"New Zealand passed legislation Wednesday allowing its main intelligence agency to spy on residents and citizens. The bill to expand the power of the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) passed by 61 votes to 59. 'This is not, and never will be, about wholesale spying on New Zealanders,' Prime Minister John Key told parliament. 'There are threats our government needs to protect New Zealanders from, those threats are real and ever-present and we underestimate them at our peril.' U.S. Air Force can’t find enough people willing to be drone pilots

"The US Air Force is unable to keep up with a growing demand for pilots capable of operating drones, partly due to a shortage of volunteers, according to a new study. Despite the importance placed on the burgeoning robotic fleet, drone operators face a lack of opportunities for promotion to higher ranks and the military has failed to identify and cultivate this new category of aviators, Air Force Colonel Bradley Hoagland wrote in the report published for the Brookings Institution think tank. As of last year, the Air Force has 1,300 drone pilots, making up about 8.5 percent of the force’s aviators, compared to 3.3 percent four years [earlier]." Continue reading →
