"Ask the younger protesters who have taken to Turkey’s streets over the past two weeks what they are fighting for, and the response is simple: 'More freedom'. At the forefront are a generation who, unlike their parents, have grown up in an increasingly outward-looking and fast-growing economy, a new middle class with satellite TV, smartphones and social media connections with friends around the world. Ironically it is Erdogan who has driven that change, overseeing a near-tripling in nominal wealth over his past decade in power. "Going completely unreported in the US mainstream media are the massive nationwide protests occurring right now in Brazil. In all the major population centers, including Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, the capital of Brasilia, and 8 other cities, 10s of thousands, possibly 100s of thousands of people are marching in the streets and taking over government buildings. "A man stood still in Istanbul’s Taksim Square: silent, staring straight ahead, he had not moved for hours. His peaceful action, on the square that police cleared of protesters on Saturday and where the Turkish authorities have banned gatherings, was a new form of protest. He arrived Monday evening as night was falling and took up position in the middle of the square, just a stone’s throw from Gezi Park. In an act that beggars belief, the Cypriot Parliament has levied a 30% tax on the interest earned from bank deposits. In another measure which defies logic, a property tax was insisted on by the Troika of international lenders. "The Greek national broadcaster was taken off air in the middle of a programme on Tuesday night without warning, without a public debate or a debate in parliament. A brave group of journalists have rebelled and keep a skeleton service going as a pirate station cheered on by supporters in scenes worthy of a fascist dictatorship. A poll shows two thirds of the Greeks oppose the closure of their national broadcaster, paid for by their taxes. China blasts U.S. surveillance program exposed by Edward Snowden

"China’s official army newspaper branded the U.S. Internet surveillance programme exposed by former spy Edward Snowden as 'frightening', and accused the US of being a 'habitual offender' when it comes to network monitoring. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Daily hit out at the US for implying that spying on citizens from other countries was justified, and said that the PRISM monitoring programme had probably been used to collect large amounts of data unrelated to anti-terrorism operations.
