I (Jesse C. Jones) chose the above title to reflect my understanding of what the Bible tells us about God’s plan and purpose in sending His only Son to earth in the form of a man. We know that Jesus came to restore God’s chosen ones to favor through spiritual regeneration. The path He chose is marked with milestones described herein. John wrote this Gospel while he was bishop of the church at Ephesus, during the period between 80 - 90 AD, and prior to the writing of 1, 2, and 3 John, and the Book of Revelation. This Gospel is often referred to as the “spiritual Gospel,” since it focuses on the spiritual aspect of Jesus’ ministry, emphasizing His divinity. The design of this letter was to correct false teachings, and to point out to this church the supreme headship of Christ, who is above all principalities and powers. This is one of the four “Prison Epistles,” the other three being Ephesians, Philippians, and Philemon (62-63 AD). Topics include faith, putting on the mind of Christ, the old man, and intercession.
Paul opens his epistle by identifying himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead by God the Father to deliver them from this present evil age. Paul and the brethren with him ask for His grace and peace to be on the churches of Galatia. Topics include circumcision, works of the flesh, fruits of the Spirit, and bearing one another's burdens.
This letter was not long in following the first, probably not more than a month or two. It would seem that a forged letter had come to this church purporting to have come from the apostle, which proclaimed that the day of the Lord was at hand. The second epistle was written to give the church more specific instructions on this point, to set their minds at rest and give them an understanding of this matter.
This is a private letter, the only one of the kind written by Paul, and the shortest of his epistles. Philemon was a resident of Colossae and was member of the church there (Colossians 4:9). It was by Paul he was brought into the Christian life. That Philemon was an earnest Christian appears from Paul’s statements. Paul rejoices over the faith and love of Philemon; asks forgiveness for Onesimus.
James identifies himself as a servant of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, writing to the twelve Jewish tribes of the Dispersion. He immediately jumps into the difficult teaching about temptations that try our faith, but produce patience, and if completed will make us complete, lacking nothing.
